Principal Punched, Students Attacked at Cal High Today

Seven police officers were called to the scene of a large fight at Cal High this afternoon.

A teen-age girl punched California High School Principal Mark Corti three times in the face, bit two school officials, and attacked numerous students early this afternoon, police said.

San Ramon Police received a panicked call at 1:05 p.m. that "everything is out of control" at the school and a "huge fight" involving students and staff in the quad area had broken out.

"She attacked staff when they tried to pull her away from attacking the students," said Sgt. Mike Boehrer.

Seven police officers immediately responded to the scene, where they apprehended the girl after she broke a classroom window and jumped out.

Boehrer said that the girl sustained mild injuries and was treated at the hospital before being booked at juvenile hall and charged with felony battery.

The girl, whose name is not being released because she is a juvenile, is not a Cal High student. Boehrer said she "is living in San Ramon."

Corti sent the following message to the Cal High parent community today, after the incident:

Dear Parents,

As you may know, there were incidents on the California High School campus today during brunch and lunch that involved altercations between students or groups of students. The San Ramon Police Department was called to assist our own staff members.

Based on preliminary investigations, the number of students involved ranged between six and 12. We also believe, after talking with numerous students, that at least one of the altercations may have been racially motivated and triggered by an incident earlier this week at the San Ramon Skate Park.

We will continue to work closely with the San Ramon Police Department to investigate these incidents.

We will have additional police presence and staff supervision on campus tomorrow to address any potential safety issues. There will be no interruption to our regular school day tomorrow, and we will continue to communicate with our parent community if new information becomes available. If you have any additional information that would assist us in our investigation please contact us.
