Special education student-athletes from Dougherty Valley High and a number of local schools traveled to Acalanes High School in Lafayette Tuesday to compete in the Bay Area Games, the first interscholastic competition created specifically for special education student-athletes in the Bay Area. In total, 330 students, representing San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda and Contra Costa counties competed in three different track and field disciplines. The world-famous basketball tricksters will be at 24 Hour Fitness on June 29.
The world-famous Harlem Globetrotters will be teaching some of their basketball tricks to San Ramon kids at 24 Hour Fitness on June 29. It's part of the Globetrotters summer 24 Hour Fitness Tour. The basetball entertainers are going to 40 different 24 Hour Fitness locations across the United States. The skills clinic is designed to take fans ages six to 14 behind the curtain to see the magic behind the Globetrotters’ electrifying basketball skills and tricks, participants will also learn about the importance of staying active and eating healthy. Monte Vista has one of its own at the helm of the Golden State Warriors as alum Bob Myers was recently appointed GM of the NBA team.
Bob Myers, who graduated from Monte Vista High School in 1993, is now the main man for the Golden State Warriors. After spending the last year as the assistant general manager (he joined the organization in April, 2011) for the Oakland-based team, Co-Executive Chairman & CEO Joe Lacob has named the 37-year-old its new general manager. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." Cal and Stanford women's soccer teams played an exhibition game at Dougherty Valley High on Saturday to support a 10-year-old San Ramon girl who has been diagnosed with cancer.
"Today we're out here for Breezy." That's what one Cal women's soccer player said, but it might as well of come from any of the 3,500 people that were at Dougherty Valley High on Saturday. Last fall, Brianne "Breezy" Bochenek was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. To show their support for Breezy and to raise funds for other children battling Osteosarcoma, friends of the Bochenek family organized a chaity soccer game between Cal and Stanford in San Ramon. Event organizers estimated more than 15 local soccer clubs attended the event and it raised more than $8,000. Thousands came out to Dougherty Valley High on Saturday to watch two great college soccer programs and to show support for kids battling cancer. The event was organized by friends of the Bochenek family, whose 10-year-old daughter Brianne (who goes by "Breezy") was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma last fall. Stanford beat Cal 1-0 in the exhibition game, but more importantly the event raised more than $8,000 for kids battling Osteosarcoma. You can read more about the event here.
Event organizers estimated about 3,500 people attended and more than $8,000 was raised for families affected by Osteosarcoma.

More than 1,000 participate in a variety of runs on Mount Diablo
More than 1,000 runners hit the trails on Mount Diablo on Saturday morning, participating in one of four different races on the state park's trails. Entrants in the 5k, 10k and half marathon races all started and finished at Castle Rock Park on the mountain's Walnut Creek side. The hearty participants in the 50k (31 mile) race began their trek at Round Valley on the mountain's eastern slopes. They finished at Castle Rock Park. The event raised money for Save Mount Diablo. Officials at the organization say the races also help raise awareness of the mountain and its scenic beauty. More information on the race, including results, can be found on the group's website. The University of California and Stanford are heated rivals in women's soccer, but later this month the two teams will come together in San Ramon for a cause more important than wins or losses. The two elite women's soccer college programs will play an exhibition game at Dougherty Valley High on April 21 at 5 p.m. Proceeds from the game will go to the family of 10-year-old Brianne “Breezy” Bochenek and other children who have been diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. Bochenek, who was a competitive soccer player, was diagnosed with the cancer last fall and has since aggressively fought the cancer, with chemotherapy and support from family and the San Ramon community.
