National Police week is May 13-19. Appreciate law enforcement year-round.
I can't tell you how many times I've overheard someone talk negatively about police officers and other law enforcement officials. All too often, I believe, the police are painted as the bad guys, writing tickets and making arrests. But they're also the first people you call when you need help. I bring this up now because May 13-19 is National Police Week. Police Week began in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation declaring May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the corresponding week as Police Week. This resonates with me because I grew up with a police officer - my dad. Every night, my mom would kiss him goodbye and tell him to "be careful." I knew he had a dangerous job, but it never really sunk in until the night …
Chabot Space & Science Center will host events where people can see the celestial sights. This is the last time Venus will pass in front of the Sun until 2117.
Astronomers and volunteers at Chabot Space & Science Center are preparing for expected crowds over the next couple of weeks when three major astronomical events take place, beginning this weekend. On Sunday afternoon, viewers on the West Coast will have a particularly clear view of the Annular Solar Eclipse. This is a rare sight in which the rim of the sun becomes a brilliant ring completely encircling the silhouette of the moon. Chabot will be open past normal closing for a viewing party on the observatory deck from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. with the maximum eclipse at 6:32 p.m. In addition to hands-on solar projects and DIY pin-hole cameras, experienced astronomers will be on deck to guide visitors through safe viewing. Tickets are $5 after 5 p.…

Have you seen this car?
Dublin Police are asking for your help to find the black Mercedes that may have struck and killed a bicyclist late Tuesday night. According to a Dublin Police press release: During the examination of the vehicle parts left at the accident scene investigators discovered, through the part’s serial numbers, that the vehicle Dublin Police Services is searching for is a black 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS 500/550 or 2012 CLS63. Joann Abraham, who lives nearby, said she heard a “terrible screeching” just before the police arrived on Dougherty Road. “The whole place lit up,” she commented about the emergency vehicles responding to the scene. If you have information about this accident, call Dublin Police Sergeant Yesenia Sanchez or the Traffic Division…
City Council voted to allow the store to open inside the old Nob Hill space on Santa Rita Road, despite objections from one council member.
The Pleasanton City Council voted Tuesday night to allow a Walmart Neighborhood Market to open inside the long-vacant Nob Hill grocery spot on Santa Rita Road. After months of community back-and-forth and a blizzard of meetings, the council voted 4-1 to allow the store; Councilman Matt Sullivan was the lone dissenter, having brought an 11th-hour appeal to stop it. Those against the store have said the retail giant treats its employees horribly, and they also say they worry about local stores going out of business because of Walmart's famously low prices. In Pleasanton, there are several new stores popping up, including a new Safeway and a possible New Leaf Market. Locally, competition is already fierce. Those who support the store point to…
The bicyclist was struck and killed, possibly by a Mercedes, on Dougherty Road near San Ramon late Tuesday night.
A male bicyclist was found dead in the street Tuesday night, the apparent victim of a hit and run, according to Dublin Police. At 11:30 p.m., Dublin Police Services received a call of a person down in the roadway in the area of Dougherty Road at Fall Creek near Camp Parks, Lieutenant Herb Walters said. When officers arrived they found a 55- to 60-year-old man in the street. “Fire and paramedics responded and determined that the man was dead,” Walters said. “Later it was determined that the man had been victim of a hit and run accident.” Walters said they found vehicle parts at the scene and that investigators believe the car that hit the man is a 2010-2011 black Mercedes Benz with possible front end damage. The victim hasn't been …

On Tuesday, several hundred cyclists raced through Danville, up Mt. Diablo. Here's a photo gallery.
It was slightly comical. I arrived at the corner of Blackhawk Road and Mt. Diablo Scenic Drive at about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday morning. I thought, maybe, the racers would zip through sometime around noon. And I really wasn't sure what to expect. So, I parked, and started taking pictures. Pictures of signs, of people sitting, flowers, other cyclists not affiliated with the actual race. It was 11 a.m., then noon, then 12:30 p.m. than 1. The California Highway Patrol was on scene to keep the peace, make sure the roads were closed, and to lead the front and the caboose of the race. One Patrol officer told me 63 officers were supporting the race (all paid for by Amgen, he said). Around 1:30 p.m., the racers showed up. First it was the four in the …
