Scouts Going Door to Door To Pick Up Food Donations on Saturday

Dozens of Scout members will go door to door to pick up items to be donated to local food banks

Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will walk the streets of San Ramon Valley this weekend to collect canned food for the local food bank.

If you set out canned foods by 9 a.m. Saturday, local Scouts will collect it.

About 2,000 San Ramon Valley Scouts will pick up canned goods that people leave on their doorsteps or sidewalks as part of a nationwide program called "Scouting for Food."

Donations will go to the Concord-based Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. It's one of the food pantry's biggest collections of the year.

Last weekend, scouts visited several San Ramon Valley neighborhoods to leave door hangers with details about the food drive, including collection times and what types of foods are OK to donate.

If you miss the drive, you can find one of the food bank's collection barrels in several schools and at some businesses. You can leave food in grocery bags or cardboard boxes.

The Scouts also ask anyone with extra eyeglasses to donate those, too, in separate containers.

The glasses go to the local Lion's Club. They will then be cleaned, sorted by prescription type and given to folks who may not be able to afford them otherwise.
