San Ramon's First 'Olympic Day' Coming Up

Olympic swimmer Lynn Gautchi will speak at the June 24 event.

Locals can get a taste of the Olympic spirit right here in San Ramon this month.

The city's first Olympic Day takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 24 at the Dougherty Valley Aquatic Center. The event is celebrated across the nation and in 160 other countries, according to the City of San Ramon.

"Olympic Day is not only a celebration, but an international effort to promote fitness and well-being in addition to Olympic ideals of fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship."

The city is teaming up with the U.S. Olympic Committee and sponsor McDonald's to bring the event to town.

Kids from the city's summer camps will march in a parade to start the evening and Olympic swimmer Lynn Gautschi will speak. She won a silver medal for the 400m individual medley in the 1964 summer Olympics in Mexico City and a bronze for the 200 IM during the 1972 games in Munich.

And Walnut Creek's synchronized swim team, the Aquanuts, will give a demonstration.

Kids can watch lifeguard demos, and take part in inner tube races and a rubber ducky dunk. Recreation swimming at both city aquatic centers will be free that night.
