San Ramon 11s Crowned District 57 Champions

A win over Danville in the district finals sends the San Ramon all stars to the Sectional competition

The Star: San Ramon’s starting pitcher Nick Sherman took charge on the mound Friday night, throwing a complete game with just 81 pitches. While only allowing Danville two runs and five hits, Sherman struck out five batters. Also active at the plate, he earned two hits of his own and one run.

The Turning Point: It was not long into the first inning before San Ramon’s offense made its mark, with Ryan Cole knocking the first pitch into left field for a leadoff double. Before the end of the inning, San Ramon batted through the order and scored five runs to give itself a commanding lead.

What's next? With their win, the San Ramon all stars are officially the District 57 11-year-old champions. They will compete in the Sectionals competition beginning July 16 in Fremont.

The tone of the game between the 11-year-old San Ramon and Danville all stars could be described by the game’s first play, in which leadoff hitter Ryan Cole smashed the pitch from Danville’s Blake Harrison into deep left field for a double.

San Ramon took control of the game from that point forward, defeating Danville 9-2 Friday night to win the District 57 Championship.

In the first inning alone, San Ramon earned four more hits after Cole’s leadoff double to give the team a 5-0 lead. Jack Powers’s bases-loaded double late in the inning was responsible for two of those runs.

Although providing run support was not a problem for San Ramon, it also was not necessary. Nick Sherman pitched a complete game and earned five strikeouts, holding Danville to five hits.

Danville did break Sherman’s shut out when the team scored two runs in the fourth. Jack Mortensen and Luke O’Brien both hit singles to get on base, and after a sacrifice bunt from relief pitcher Holden Canavan, Matt Gillespie batted both runners in with a single.

San Ramon responded by putting three insurance runs on the board in the fifth. Robbie Funkhouser came up big for the team with a bases-loaded double that scored two runs.

As champions of District 57, San Ramon moves on to compete in the NorCal Section 3 Bracket in Fremont beginning July 16, in hopes of eventually being named NorCal champions.
