Little League All Stars: San Ramon Junior 90s Cruise to District 57 Championship

San Ramon will move onto to California Section 3 Tournament this weekend.

The Star: In a game where San Ramon notched ten runs, the real star was starting pitcher Alex Ross. The southpaw was dominant from the beginning as he threw a complete-game shutout, allowing six hits and one walk.

The Turning Point: A suicide squeeze might be one of the rarest plays in baseball, but it helped lead San Ramon to victory. San Ramon's Alex Van Iderstine executed the play perfectly to plate C.J. Veatch for San Ramon's first run. Van Iderstine would later score on a Grant Halpin triple, but it was Van Iderstine's squeeze that game San Ramon the momentum it needed.

The Quote: "I'm really proud of the team," San Ramon coach Bill Ross said. "This team has been playing together for a couple years now, and we've been able to keep this group together for that time. This team sets high expectations for itself, and I feel they achieved them."

On a day where Major League Baseball players were showing the world what they can do with a bat in the home run derby, the San Ramon  Little League Junior 90s put on a show of its own.

San Ramon defeated Granada 10-0 in the District 57 Junior 90s Championship game to earn the title.

This game belonged to San Ramon from the beginning as it controlled the game both on the mound and at the plate.

San Ramon scored its first run on a successful suicide squeeze by Alex Van Iderstine to score C.J. Veatch in the bottom of the second. Grant Halpin plated two on a triple later in the inning.

San Ramon added a fourth run in the third on a Dean Heinz RBI single.

The real fireworks for San Ramon, however, came in the bottom of the fifth as it scored six runs, including a walk-off single by Heinz which put the 10-run rule into affect.

While San Ramon was performing at the plate, Alex Ross was dominating on the mound. Ross went the distance, giving up no runs on six hits.

Coach Bill Ross feels this game was a good representation of what this team can do with everyone contributing to the victory.

"This team is very balanced," coach Bill Ross said. "All 11 players on the roster are strong, so we don't have to rely on just one player to carry us. It takes an entire team to win."

With the win, San Ramon Little League has now won three District 57 All-Star championships. Ross feels this is not just due to the players in the system, but also the coaches and administrators that help the league run smoothly.

"Everyone helps this league be as successful as it is," Ross said. "I think it's also due to the players staying in the program and not leaving to play pony or club baseball."

San Ramon will now move onto the Section 3 Tournament in Fremont, starting this weekend. Ross feels San Ramon has a good chance to advance deep in the tournament.

"I think there is no limit to what this team can do," he said. "The Tri-Valley is known for its strong competition, so I feel just playing in this area prepared us pretty well for this tournament."
