Jockey Killed in Race at Alameda County Fair

Jorge Herrera, 33, was thrown from his mount during a race Thursday at the Alameda County Fair.

Here's information provided by the Alameda County Fair:

The Alameda County Fair Association regrets to announce the passing of jockey Jorge Herrera who died in an unfortunate racing incident. Our heart felt sentiments go out to his family. The entire horse racing community is saddened and will deeply mourn this loss. We hope to establish a tribute that will honor his life and contributions.

Details:

During the last race of the day on Thursday, July 5, jockey Jorge Herrera was killed when he was thrown from his horse. It appears that either his horse or another horse stepped on him, causing severe head trauma.

As is our normal safety protocol, an ambulance was following seconds behind the race, therefore, emergency medical personnel responded immediately.

Mr. Herrera was transported to Eden Trauma Center in Castro Valley in very critical condition where he later passed away.

We are in shock and sorrow. The last death of a jockey that occurred at our race track was 37 years ago in 1975 — Juan Gonzalez.
