Spivey and Raventos combine for 234 rushing yards.

Dougherty Valley 36, Riordan 14

The Star: Senior RB/LB Michael Spivey rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown, and was strong at his inside linebacker position, along with his duties on multiple special teams.

The Turning Point: Dougherty Valley's first possession of the third quarter: a 13-play, 85-yard march down the field, all on the ground, and capped by Raventos' 1-yard touchdown run. The drive consumed over six minutes, and gave the Wildcats a 17-0 lead.

Bottom Line: Riordan could not contain Spivey, Raventos, and a Dougherty Valley running game that amassed 379 yards on the ground.

On a cold and foggy afternoon in San Francisco, Dougherty Valley High used a punishing rushing attack to knock off Archbishop Riordan 36-14 in its season-opener.

After an offseason which included a lot of hard work and preparation, Dougherty Valley head coach Bob Spain could not have hoped for a better start to the season.

"It happened the way it should if we could draw it up," Spain said. "We played a physical game, and when that happens, things should take care of themselves."

Senior running back's Michael Spivey (142 rushing yards and a touchdown) and Lucas Raventos (92 yards and a touchdown) led the way for the Wildcats on the ground, and the defense kept Riordan out of the end zone until late in the fourth quarter.

Spivey, a 5-foot-11, 220-pounder, got things rolling early.

On Dougherty Valley's opening possession of the game, the offense lined up in a traditional wishbone formation, and quickly marched on a six-play, 54-yard touchdown drive. When Spivey bowled into the end zone from nine yards out, the Wildcats had an early 7-0 lead.

"He is absolutely awesome," Spain said of Spivey. "He is the heart and soul of the team, and a super kid."

With the defense keeping Riordan in check, and holding a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter, Dougherty Valley defensive back Cody Larkin stepped in front of a deflected pass, returning the interception to the Riordan 35-yard line.

After a short drive, Dougherty kicker Mitch Ward was true on a 37-yard field goal, and Dougherty Valley had a 17-0 halftime lead.

The senior was also good from 40 yards out in the second half, kicking into the wind and fog that hovered around the field.

"He's the closest thing we have to a D-1 player," Spain said.

Midway through the third quarter, it was Raventos' chance to get onto the scoreboard.

After a signature 13-play, 85-yard drive that included a 26-yard run by Martin Walker, Raventos powered in from 10 yards out to give Dougherty Valley a commanding 27-0 lead.

Riordan kept things interesting late in the fourth quarter with two scores, including a 56-yard catch and run by wide receiver A.J. Santiago, but it was too little, too late.

Senior defensive end Zac Walsh finished the game with two huge sacks, including a safety, and Wildcat's wrapped up a well-played game.

Well after the game had ended, Spivey and Raventos, the last two players left on the field, slowly headed toward the bus together.

"We just need to be physical," Raventos said, with Spivey adding, "and learn how to finish."

One regular season game down, nine to go.
