Dougherty Valley Girls Advance in Nor Cal Championships

Castro Valley and Las Lomas boys pull off upsets in Nor Cal first round while Dougherty Valley girls crush Chico High.

Here are the results from the local high school basketball teams in the Nor Cal championships on Wednesday evening.

Girls Division II

Dougherty Valley 72  Chico 40

Dougherty Valley High cruised into the second round by crushing Chico High, 72-40.

The game got out of hand early. Dougherty Valley (21-9) led 19-6 after the first quarter and 42-14 at halftime.

The Wildcats were led by Caroline Hughes, who poured in 19 points and dished out eight assists. Jasmine Jenkins added 16 points and 10 rebounds while Treyvonna Brooks scored 14 points and snared 12 rebounds.

Dougherty Valley will play Saturday at top seeded St. Mary's High of Stockton (28-3).

Second seeded Carondelet High (26-3) will play at home Saturday against the winner of the Alameda/McNair first round game.

Boys Division I

Castro Valley 54  Bellarmine 48

Castro Valley High upset fifth ranked Bellarmine High, 54-48.

The 12th ranked Trojans (23-7) will now play at fourth seeded Jesuit Carmichael High (25-6) on Saturday.

Castro Valley held a 25-21 lead at halftime. They widened the margin to 42-34 entering the final quarter on their way to victory.

Castro Valley was led by Jalen McFerran, who scored 16 points. Derrick Clayton added 11 points while Dawson Johnson scored 10.

Top seeded De La Salle High (27-2) had a bye in the first round. The Spartans will play Pleasant Grove High (24-6) of Elk Grove at home on Saturday.

Boys Division II

Las Lomas 76  Lodi 64

Las Lomas High upset sixth ranked Lodi High, 76-64.

The 11th ranked Knights (21-10) will play at third seeded Serra High on Saturday.

Las Lomas led 38-34 at halftime and then slowly pulled away in the second half.

The Knights were led by Max Lober, who hit four three-pointers and scored 21 points. Christian Lawson added 17.

Second seeded Newark Memorial High (26-4) had a first round bye. The Cougars will play at home Saturday against seventh seeded Bella Vista High (26-5) of Fair Oaks.
