Dougherty Valley Wins 3rd Tournament Championship Over Ukiah

Submitted by Dave Winkler

For the third straight year, the Dougherty Valley High Wildcats won 3 games in 3 days to bring home the Ukiah tourney championship trophy.

Game 1 had our Wildcats matched against the Pumas from Maria Carillo HS.
DV built an 11-point halftime lead and rolled to a fairly easy 67-48 win. Kamar Reese led the way with 30 points, ably supported by Jarvis Edwards with 15.

Game 2 was a different story as the Fortuna Huskies came to play and were not going to back down to anyone. After a 32-32 halftime tie, Fortuna forged a 3-point lead after 3 quarters and then led by 5 with a minute to play.

It was looking a little grim at that point but sharpshooter Jordan Fujita (winner of the 3-point shooting contest earlier in the day) hit a game-saving 3, defense got a stop, Kamar hit a bucket, defense got another stop and we were in OT knotted at 62.

In OT the DV boys hit 6 of 7 free throws, Jordan canned another 3 and we had won a 73-71 thriller. Kamar again led the way with 29 and freshman sensation Austin Fadal added 17.

The Saturday championship once again had our guys facing the host Ukiah Wildcats for the 3rd straight year.

Ukiah was missing the deadly outside shooters they had in previous years and instead mainly relied on throwing the ball in to their low-post players. This worked on occasion but DV High was playing tenacious defense forcing turnovers and hitting a high percentage of their shots.

All of this was bad for Ukiah. DV led from the start, added to their lead every quarter and won going away 73-40. Coach Hansen emptied the bench with 5 minutes to play getting everyone into the action.

Kamar once again was leading scorer with 28 hitting baskets in every way imaginable, silky smooth freshman Austin Fadal popped for 10, steady Jarvis Edwards scored 8 and Gabriel Manansala, another freshman, came off the bench to drop in 6.

Jarvis Edwards and Austin Fadal were named to the all-tourney team while Kamar Reese (29 pts/gm avg.) collected his 2nd you count the alumni game).

Keep it going Wildcats!
