Cal Wraps up Successful Athletic Year

21 of 24 teams made the NCS playoffs

For the California High athletic program, the 2009-10 season will go down as a huge success.

Of the school's 24 varsity programs, 21 made the North Coast Section playoffs and 23 of the 24 teams each Scholastic Team Awards from NCS for their success in the classroom.

"We are very proud of what our teams were able to do on the field and in the classroom," Cal athletic director Eileen Mantz said.

The girls swimming team posted the highest grade point average with a 3.57.

The program featured nine new head coaches — seven of which led their teams to the postseason.

Cal's boys soccer team put together the best NCS run, advancing to the finals before being eliminated by De La Salle 1-0. The team's goalie, senior Andre Rawls, was one of two high jumpers who qualified for the CIF State Track and Field Championships joining sophomore Noel Frazier.

Frazier placed fifth at the state meet and played a big role on the basketball team's run to the playoffs in coach Cary Willson's final year of an 11-season run. Bob Donovan will replace Willson next year.

Tennis players Shannon Hung and Kellie Taylor advanced to the NCS finals in doubles before losing to a pair from Mission San Jose.

Joining Frazier and Rawls at the State Meet was the trio of distance runners on the girls side — .

The three girls helped Cal to its second-straight undefeated East Bay Athletic League championship in track, while Lillig and McVay also advanced to the State Cross Country Meet in the fall.

Golfer Justin Haley, who won the North Coast Section title a year ago, advanced to the CIF Northern California Championships for the second-straight year where he was 1-under par.

It was also a good year on the diamond.

The softball team won a co-championship with Livermore and the baseball team advanced to the NCS semifinals for the second-straight year.

In girls soccer, boys tennis and girls lacrosse, the Grizzlies also made the NCS semifinals.
