Cal Girls Soccer Ties Monte Vista, 1-1

After quick starts, California High and Monte Vista High defense keeps the score at a draw.

The California High girls soccer team tied Monte Vista, 1-1, on Thursday night.

Both teams had quick starts with senior forward Morgan Collyer of Cal scoring in the third minute with the assist by junior midfielder Rachel Feldman.

Monte Vista answered swiftly with a kick into the upper right corner of the goal by freshman forward Mallory Hromatko in the ninth minute.

The teams upped the intensity on both ends of the field in the second half. The Mustangs controlled the ball for much of the half with 13 shots on goal while the Grizzlies rallied back late in the game with 14 shots attempts.

A combined 15 saves by the goalies of both teams in addition to aggressive defense ended the half with no scores.

Physical defense and a lack of referee calls led to frustration with players and coaches. With a total of five fouls called, the Monte Vista bench and spectators voiced their disapproval of the last three whistles against the Mustangs in the final minutes of play.

California High (9-3-1) will play Carondelet at home on Tuesday while Monte Vista (6-0-5) will meet Albany on Friday at home.
