Big Games and Star Players

Patch looks at some of this week's big basketball games as well as the high school players who shined last week

A couple of league titles on the line as we head into this final week of the regular season for high school basketball.

Before we look ahead, let's glance back at some of the premiere performances last week.

Boys Spotlight Player of the Week

Clayton Valley High's Craig Ihle scored 22 points in the Eagles' 56-55 come-from-behind victory against Concord High on Friday. The senior guard also had five points in limited action against Mt. Diablo High on Tuesday.

Clayton Valley basketball coach Troy Sullivan said Ihle is a 4.0 student who is popular on campus, helping his fellow students in a variety of ways.

"Craig is a leader on and off the floor for us," said Sullivan. "He has been the leading scorer in many of our games and is a bundle of energy while on defense. In his role as one of our team captains, he has provided the leadership that drives others to excel."

Girls Spotlight Player of the Week

San Leandro High senior Deajanae Conic had a superb week despite two losses by her team.

Conic scored 23 points in the Pirates' game against Arroyo High on Wednesday night. She came back to tally another 19 points in Friday evening's contest against Hayward High.

San Leandro basketball coach Eddie Arnold said Conic has bounced back strongly from some early season injuries to lead her team in virtually every game.

"DJ has been a great leader for the team and a pleasure to coach," said Arnold. "She pushes herself in practice to have the best game she can on game day."

Other notable performances

Dublin High junior guard Jamir Andrews had another big game on Friday night as he scored 34 points in the Gaels' 66-63 victory over Alhambra High.

California High guard Ryan Hyrn poured in 25 points Tuesday night in the Grizzlies' victory over Foothill High. He added 14 points in Friday night's loss to Amador Valley High. Hyrn is shooting 45 percent this season from beyond the 3-point arc. His coach, Bob Donovan, says Hyrn "works hard, is a team player and is a leader on this year’s team."

Livermore High junior guard Chad Wilkinson poured in 24 points on Friday evening in the Cowboys' come-from-behind 67-64 victory over San Ramon Valley High. Wilkinson is averaging more than 11 points a game this season and is known for playing tough defense.

Dougherty Valley High senior center/forward Treyvonne Brooks scored 13 points and snared 12 rebounds in the Wildcats' narrow 64-62 loss to undefeated Miramonte High on Tuesday night.

Clayton Valley High senior forward Molly Kommer knocked down 26 points in the Eagles' 72-35 victory over Concord on Friday night.

Foothill High senior guard Maddie Craig continued her excellent season by scoring 23 points in the Falcons' 54-49 victory over highly regarded Monte Vista High on Friday night.

This week's big games

The DVAL's boys basketball title will be on the line when Northgate High travels to College Park High.

The game begins at 7 p.m. at the Falcons' gym in Pleasant Hill.

Northgate is 16-8 overall and 8-2 in league play. After two early season league losses, the Broncos have won seven in a row, including a 56-54 victory over College Park on Jan. 20.

The Falcons are 17-7 on the season and 9-1 in league play. They have won five in a row since their narrow loss to Northgate.

Dublin High's boys team still has DFAL title hopes as it heads to Campolindo High for a 7 p.m. game in Moraga.

The Gaels are 16-8 overall and 7-3 in league play. Dublin has lost two of its past three games, so they are hoping for a strong performance here.

Campolindo High is 18-4 overall and 8-2 in league play. The Cougars appeared to have the league title wrapped up until they lost last week to Las Lomas High and Dougherty Valley High.

Carondelet High will try to take another step toward an undefeated league season when it hosts Foothill High's girls basketball team.

The game begins at 7 p.m. in the Cougars' gym.

Carondelet is 21-3 overall and 12-0 in league play. They've won nine in a row, including a 77-73 victory Saturday over highly ranked Deer Valley High.

Foothill is 13-11 overall and 8-4 in league. However, they have won six in a row since losing 67-50 to Carondelet on Jan. 20. That's one of the closer league matches the Cougars have had this season.

Castro Valley High's boys basketball team will try to get back on the winning track when it travels to San Leandro High for a 7 p.m. game.

The Trojans are 18-6 overall and 10-4 in league. However, they have lost two of their past three games, including a 43-42 defeat Saturday at the hands of San Lorenzo High.

San Leandro defeated Castro Valley, 58-49, on Jan. 13. The Pirates are 19-5 overall and 11-3 in league. They've won five in a row.

Northgate High's girls team will be hoping to wrap up an undefeated league season this week culminating in its game Friday evening at Clayton Valley High.

The game begins at 7 p.m. at the Eagles gym in Concord.

The Broncos are 15-9 overall and 10-0 in league. They've won five in a row. They also defeated Clayton Valley, 64-56, on Jan. 24.

The Eagles are 14-10 on the season and 8-2 in league. They've won four straight since their loss to Northgate.

Castro Valley High's girls team will try to avenge an earlier loss this season when it travels to Moreau Catholic High for a 5:30 p.m. game.

The Trojans are 17-7 overall and 10-4 in league play. One of those losses was a 62-58 defeat to Moreau Catholic on Jan. 25. Castro Valley has won their past two games.

Moreau Catholic is 16-8 on the season and 11-3 in league play. They've won four straight.
