Baseball: Wildcats No-Hit By Campo Sophomore

DV falls prey to outstanding pitching from Campolindo.

The Dougherty Valley High baseball team was simply shut down by Campolindo starting pitcher James Marvel Thursday.

Marvel no-hit Dougherty in a 5-0 Campolindo win and finished the game with four stirkeouts.

"We got beat by a very good player who was absolutely on his 'A' game today," Dougherty coach Brian Freitas said.

The Wildcats had no trouble getting the ball in play, but the Cougars made the defensive plays, Freitas said.

Marvel said his defense played a huge role in the outcome.

"I was just trying to spot up and do what I needed to," he said. "My defense was great behind me and they made a lot of plays to support me. It was the whole team that got the win."

Campolindo coach Max Luckhurst was proud of his pitcher's accomplishment.

"I dont think he came out with any intention to do what he did," he said. "He just pitched like he needed to, and ended up going all seven innings."

The Cougars relied on sacrifice flies and bunts to help earn the win. Campolindo first baseman Chris Killeen had two doubles and a triple in his four at-bats.

Though they suffered a hard loss, the Wildcats were proud of their effort.

"I felt like our team worked really hard, but obviously you've got to tip your hat to (Marvel's) pitching," senior captain Nick Boulton said. "But I think our preseason hard work is paying off."

The Wildcats' recent performance seems to support Boulton's view. They came into Thursday's game having won three of their last four games and already qualified for the North Coast Section Division III playoffs. Freitas and the players are confident the team has a bright future.

"We're a very young team and this is a learning experience for us," Freitas said. "We've made a lot of great strides so far, but there's still work to do."

The Wildcats play away at Las Lomas on Tuesday in their second to last regular season game.
