SRVUSD Staff May Receive One-Time Payment

Money would compensate district employees for last year's furlough days.

The Board of Education votes tonight on a proposed one-time payment to San Ramon Valley Unified School District employees to make up for lost income.

“We’ve reached a tentative agreement with our teachers union (San Ramon Valley Education Association) that includes a one-time payment in recognition of two furlough days taken by all employees last year,” said Terry Koehne, the district’s community relations coordinator.

Koehne pointed out this is not a salary increase. The payment would be 1.08 percent of each person’s base salary and is for current employees only.

“It’s the equivalent of two furlough days taken last year, which helped get us through the financial constraints we were under,” Koehne explained.

Koehne said the payment, if approved, would be made by December. The cost of $1.143 million would come from the district's reserves.

Teachers in the district took furlough days in both September and November last year.

Ann Katzburg, SRVEA vice president and teacher at Hidden Hills Elementary School in San Ramon, told the San Ramon Express yesterday that San Ramon Valley teachers have not received a pay increase since 2007, but they are happy for the extra money.

"Teachers are always working so much more than their work day,” Katzburg said. “We work weekends. We work evenings. The compensation is a good gesture."

Tonight's meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the district board rooms at 699 Old Orchard Drive, Danville.
