School Leaders Talk Budget, Celebrate Retirees

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District approved the budget for next school year and honored the district's retirees at Tuesday's board meeting.

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District’s general fund still faces an $8.2 million deficit for the 2011-12 school year.

Staffing ratios for the schools were based on “flat funding,” with the district rolling over this year’s budget.

All of the staffing will remain the same and classroom ratios will remain at the increased number that began the 2010-11 school year, with 26 students to 1 teacher for K-3, 30 to 1 for grades 4 and 5, 29 to one for middle school and 28 to 1 for high school.

Business Services and Facilities Development assistant superintendent, Gary Black, said the budget could change later to decrease class sizes depending on the state budget passing on June 15.

Even though Governor Jerry Brown came out with a revised budget on May 16 that would bring $3 billion more to California schools than proposed in January, SRVUSD officials are still planning the budget on the assumption that the money may not come depending on the state’s budget in June.

Even with the flat funding, the district could still face mid-year to end-of-the-year cuts if tax extensions do not pass.

“Even with flat funding, we still have a structural deficit of almost $9 million,” Superintendent Steven Enoch said.

All other funds in the district will have positive ending balances at year end, according to the district’s agenda packet.

The board approved the rollover budget.

The naming of the Monte Vista High School student center to include Workday was moved to a future meeting.

David Duffield, founder of Workday, donated funding for the building and wanted it named after his company. The board questioned how the logo would be used in the sign and references to the building, so the naming was pushed to a future meeting so the district could provide samples for the board to review.

Community members shared concerns over relocatable buildings at Country Club Elementary School. They said the current location of the buildings provides a secluded spot for people to sneak into at night and have illicit activities.

Residents complained of broken beer bottles on the school’s playground, marijuana use, condom wrappers and noise as a result of the area being secluded.

Board members said they were concerned over those issues and want the schools to be good neighbors. They suggested partnering with the city to increase police patrol to the area.

The district said Country Club Elementary needs some of the portables moved because the playground is split by the current location, making it more difficult to watch the children during recess.

The consent item was approved by the board for the portables to be moved with the understanding that they are not approving the location the portable buildings will be moved to, only that they will be moved.

Retirees were honored at the board meeting with a Retiree Reception. Each retiree was recognized by the district officials and board members.
