San Ramon Schools Win First Round in Mock Trials

One down, three to go. Dougherty Valley High and Cal High came out ahead in the first round of the annual county-wide contest.

Dougherty Valley and California high schools won the first round of the annual in Martinez Tuesday evening.

The 30th Annual Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the Contra Costa County Office of Education goes on for another three rounds over three weeks. Thirteen teams from all over the county assume roles as journalists, attorneys, witnesses, bailiffs and artists.

Dougherty Valley High beat Hercules High School in the first round. And Cal High won over Orinda's Miramonte High School, whose team took home the gold in last year's contest.

Each school has two nine-member teams. Actual Superior Court judges oversee the cases with help from practicing attorneys and senior law students.

Prelims take place again next week, with quarter-finals on Feb. 22, semifinals on Feb. 24 and finals on March 1.

The winning team goes on to the state competition in March.
