Rainy Day Walk 'n Roll

Students weathered today's storm on bike or foot as part of International Walk to School Month.

In spite of the stormy weather, droves of students walked and biked to Neil Armstrong Elementary School today for the fourth annual .

San Ramon Police Officer James Springer, Fire Engine 39 and a few school board members came out this morning to support the students for the event, which is part of International Walk to School Month.

Some of the students carried signs with the slogan, “Hike it! Bike it! I like it!”

Teachers stood on the corners passing out stickers that said, “I Walked to School Today with Kids Around the Globe!”

Students were treated to health bars and water inside Neil Armstrong’s multipurpose room.

Throughout the month, student participants will track the days they walk or bike to school as part of the “Walk/Bike Challenge,” with the opportunity to win prizes.

Next week, Neil Armstrong Elementary will host a Bike Rodeo in conjunction with Street Smarts on Wednesday from 12:30 to 2 pm. This after-school activity allows students a chance to practice their riding skills in a safe, fun and supervised environment.

International Walk to School Month is intended to promote health while teaching children safe walking skills, inspire communities to create safe routes to school for pedestrians and cyclists, and encourage concern for the environment while reducing traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools.

Last year, families in more than 40 countries took part in the event.

A special thanks to Neil Armstrong parent and PTA Treasurer Vanessa Berastain, who provided such great photos for this article!
