Schools

Photo Gallery: Back to School for SRVUSD

Students & Teachers head back to school and Patch photographer Julie Soltero was there to capture some snapshots.

The excitement for some is tremendous. For others this day comes as one they dread, summer is over, and the first day of school is here.

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District started the new school year Monday.  Budget cuts made for some changes to class sizes, programs and even how the school days are structured.

For Taylor, a lively 5-year-old headed to her first day of kindergarten at Hidden Hills Elementary School, it was a great day. She beamed with a huge smile when I asked her what her thought were as she was getting ready to walk thru the doors of her new school.

"I'm just excited" she said with a  smile and a tug on her mom's hand to move her along to get into the school.

School buses zoomed by, while many parents walked their students back to school, or some even rode bikes and scooters.

Please remember to be aware now that school is back in session, that there will be many more kids in the cross walks, and to observe the 25  mph speedlimit posted in school zones.

Senior Caitlyn Garcia said she is excited to be back at school, especially because she isn't a freshman this year.

Dougherty Valley High School Principal Denise Hibbard told me that her school is nearing 1,800 students, and that this marks the fourth year they have been open.

The school district boasts 21 elementary, eight middle and  four high schools. There are a number of private schools also serving families of the San Ramon Valley. Here's a photo essay that captures some moments from the first day of the 2010-11 school year. Enjoy!
