Goodbye Old Guinness Record and Hello New

San Ramon students help break in the attempt to set a new Guinness world record.

Today was the big day, a record-breaking day across our country as students, community members and people from coast to coast participated in a one-minute-long attempt to break a Guinness World Record by doing jumping jacks.

What started on the White House lawn as a one-minute jump led by the First Lady has travelled from coast to coast.

Students at Walt Disney Elementary School in San Ramon gathered on the school's blacktop a few minutes before noon to take part.

Even students from neighboring Pine Valley Middle School joined in the record breaking event.

"I want to be a part of a Guinness Record!" said Pine Valley sixth grader, Simrin Singh.

She joined right in and jumped along with students as young as special day class preschoolers through fifth grade.

From the moment students stepped onto the blacktop to prepare, a buzz could be heard throughout the school. All of the participants, including parents there to pick up their children, were thrilled to take part in this historic nationwide event.

It not only brought a community together; children and adults from all over the United States joined together for a common goal.

Why did local schools choose to participate?

"We want to be part of history," said Robert Alpert, interim principal at Walt Disney. "We want to show kids that we live in a country and are part of a nation where we can do things together!"
