Gauchos Win 1st Playoff Game 56-8 over Fremont's Kennedy

El Cerrito High's varsity football team extended its undefeated season to 11-0 Saturday night by defeating John F. Kennedy HIgh's Titans 56-8 in the first game of the division championship playoffs.

The undefeated Gauchos of El Cerrito High advanced in the post-season playoffs Saturday night with a decisive 56-8 defeat of John F. Kennedy High of Fremont.

The victory came in the first round of the tournament for the championship of Division III of the North Coast Section, one of the largest of the state's 10 high school athletic regions.

El Cerrito High senior Austin Harper scored three touchdowns for the Gauchos, according to MaxPreps.com. And Gauchos senior Marcellus Pippins scored twice on long punt returns, one of 82 yards and the other 70 yards, according to the Contra Costa Times.

The game at DeAnza High School in Richmond was delayed nearly an hour because the Fremont was delayed by a transportation mix-up, the Contra Costa Times said.

The 11-0 Gauchos next play the Bishop O'Dowd Dragons of Oakland at 7 p.m. next Saturday, Nov. 17, at DeAnza High. It's a "home" game for El Cerrito, which is playing its home playoff games at DeAnza.

Bishop O'Dowd defeated Acalanes 16-13 in a playoff round Friday night, giving it a 7-4 record. Kennedy High's Titans left the field in the game with El Cerrito with a 4-7 record this school year.
