District Releases Number of Layoff Notices Distributed to San Ramon schools

Pink slips could be rescinded as the budget finalizes over the next several months.

Adhering to a March 15 deadline, the San Ramon Valley Unified School District distributed a total of 159 layoff notices to employees credentialed to work with students—mostly teachers—who may not be returning to their jobs next fall because of the budget crisis in the district.

The numbers listed here for San Ramon schools do not reflect an additional 77 temporary employees in the district, mostly first- and second-year teachers, who are automatically classified as temporary and would be last to be hired back if the district's financial situation changes.

Last year, the district sent out 205 layoff notices and dismissed temporary employees who held the equivalent of 77 full-time positions. All of the layoff notices were rescinded, and most of the temporary employees were hired back, mainly thanks to one-time federal stimulus money that is no longer available.

Still, district officials appear hopeful that this round of layoff notices reflects more job losses than will actually occur.

"We don't have the one-time money we had last year," said district spokesperson Terry Koehne, who pointed out that employee attrition could ease the pressure to cut jobs, "but our hope and our goal is to rescind most if not all of these notices."
