San Ramon Schools Move on to Third Round in Mock Trials

Dougherty Valley and California high schools beat their competitors in the second round of the contest put on by the Contra Costa County Office of Education.

Two teams  – prosecution and defense – made it to the third round in the 30th Annual Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the Contra Costa County Office of Education.

's prosecution team, which won the first challenge Tuesday, lost to Walnut Creek's Las Lomas High School on Thursday. But the schools' defense team made it on to the next stage.

Cal High will compete again Tuesday .

Superior Court judges oversee the contest with the help of practicing attorneys and advanced law students. Students assume the roles of lawyers, journalists, courtroom artists, witnesses and bailiffs.

After next week's competition, quarter-finals will be Feb. 22, semifinals Feb. 24 and finals March 1.

The winning team will be in the state competition in March.
