Back To School Jitters – Even for Teachers

Nobody is immune to being nervous on the first day of school.

Did you know that even seasoned teachers feel the nervous excitement as the school year approaches?

I know, for children and their parents, it must seem hard to believe that even teachers get those first day jitters, but it is very true.

With the start of the 2012-2013 school district in the on Tuesday, children and their families are eagerly preparing for school.

Supplies have been purchased and put into backpacks. New backpacks and lunchboxes have been added to the mix. Often, a shopping spree is also part of the getting ready to return to school activities. Perhaps you have even taken your children to get haircuts in preparation for day one.

My own three boys are starting to feel a bit excited about returning to school. When asked, my son Drew said he was excited “because of recess!” Aiden wants to see who his teacher will be at . Jack is eager to find out if his best buddy will be in his class. These are common feelings that children have with the start of every school year.

Parents, too, get into the excitement of starting back at school. They wonder whom their child’s teacher will be and if it will be a successful school year. I have been one of those parents who waits for the 4 p.m. posting of class lists where my children attend school — the nervous anticipation and the excitement of learning that your child got a teacher you really wanted him or her to have.

I’ve seen the flip side where parents see me working in my classroom and knock on my door questioning when the list at my own school, , will be posted.

This will be my 15 year teaching, and I still get butterflies in my stomach as that inevitable first day approaches. I think about what I want to wear that first day of school, to make my own good impression with my students and their families I even went out and got a new hairstyle to go with the new school year.

We all do it — get ready for a new chapter in our lives — whether we are a student, a parent, a grandparent, or even a teacher. There will never be another first day of school.  ou only have a first day of kindergarten once, after all, and the same holds true for every grade level.

Whether your child is returning to elementary school, starting middle or high school, or even heading off to college, it is and will be a part of a day that will never be repeated. Even with jittery tummies for us all, there is nothing like the start of a school year!
