Stark Congratulates Swalwell on Victory, Thanks Supporters

The veteran congressman's Facebook fans offer a mix of condolences and "good riddance" messages.

A long political career ended in a way Rep. Pete Stark hoped it wouldn't Tuesday night.

The 20-term Bay Area congressman lost his congressional seat to fellow Democrat Eric Swalwell, a Dublin city councilman.

On Wednesday morning, Stark released a statement:

It has been my honor to serve the people of the East Bay for the last 40 years. I have worked hard to deliver results: accomplishments like writing the COBRA law to make health insurance portable between jobs, bringing the first computers to schools, and crafting President Obama’s groundbreaking health care law.

I went to Washington by running against an unpopular war and for women’s rights, opportunity for children and dignity for seniors. I leave knowing that the landscape has changed, but the needs of my constituents remain.

I congratulate Mr. Swalwell on his victory. I am happy to be of assistance in the future.

I want to thank all the wonderful people I met along this fabulous journey and I will remember them fondly. Together, we have made a real difference.

On his Facebook page, some of his 1,900 fans were posting their condolences while others were saying good riddance.

"Pete Stark was the BEST thing that ever happened to Alameda County and will be truly missed by his informed constituents."

"It is a sad day. Pete you are the only rep I have ever known. A pillar of progressive liberal politics."

"Thank you, Mr. Stark. You've been one of the the greatest Congressmen ever. I didn't get to vote for you this year, because they moved Alameda out of your district..."

"Got three mailers from you today. Never saw you in my home town, never saw you in a debate, never saw you walking the neighborhood. I feel like I should send you a map to Livermore, but I suspect it won't matter in a few days..."

"Bye bye Peter. There's no room for such errogance and insults to constituents."

Only one @petestark Tweet was sent Tuesday, with basic voting information and a link to find polling places.

How do you feel about this changing of the guard in East Bay politics? Let us know in the comments below.

At least the old goat can retire to Maryland full time. Good riddance.

Finally, he's gone. Should have left years ago. Too Liberal! Rude and arrogant.

I think voters proved beyond a doubt that a good candidate could take down Pete Stark.

So the next two dinosaurs to go are Fienstein and Pelosi.

Am very happy to see the senile man go, he should have resigned when he showed signs of dementia. Hope he is happy in Maryland where he lives. Glad we finally have a real local representative. And to that person who implied that all "informed" voters would vote for Stark, get a life. Congrats Eric!!!

Congrats to Swalwell. Bye bye to the absent dinosaur.

I agree they both need to go (and so does Boxer) but the libs in SF will NEVER vote Pelosi out and the crazies everywhere in CA will keep voting for Boxer and Feinstein. Sad.

The first classy thing the old man has done in decades.

Oh please, oh please, oh please.

Just a point of fact here, he only became the Rep. for this district after the changes in the district lines. So yes, he would never have been around these parts since it was not his district. I think/hope Eric Swalwell will do as well for the district as Pete Stark had done for his.

Who gives a damn about Pelosi? She's in the minority in the House and has zero political clout. She's a nobody.
Tim November 08, 2012 at 02:12 AM
I hope Swalwell can step in come January and work with other moderate Democrats to reach out to Republicans and work on bipartisan proposals to control the deficit. The TEA Party backed members will not work with the leadership so Democratic support is needed. I hope that the Democrats can agree to cut spending and I hope the GOP can agree that with Obama winning, it's time to agree to tax increases for those earning over $250K a year.
