Smoke-Filled BART Train Causes Delays, Evacuation of East Bay Passengers Monday Night

BART officials say the smoke was due to mechanical issues and not a fire.

A BART train filled with smoke was taken out of service at the West Oakland station on Monday night and caused delays of about 15 minutes, BART officials said.

Passengers reported that a train traveling through the Transbay Tube out of San Francisco towards the East Bay was filled with smoke.

The issue was reported around 9:15 p.m. and trains were back in service about 30 minutes later, BART officials said.

Passengers in the involved train on the Dublin/Pleasanton line evacuated at the West Oakland station and other trains arrived to take them to their East Bay destinations.

BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost said the train was not on fire but the smoke may have stemmed from a propulsion issue.

Shortly before 10 p.m., BART officials said there were delays on the Daly City line in the Dublin/Pleasanton, SFO and Daly City lines.
