Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi Endorses Rep. Eric Swalwell for Re-Election

The general election is about 18 months away, but Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Dublin) received a significant endorsement Monday with his re-election campaign on the horizon.

Minority leader Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives, came out strongly in favor of the freshman congressman, emphasizing his commitment to women. Pelosi endorsed Swalwell's opponent, Rep. Pete Stark, in last year's District 15 election.

Here is Pelosi's full statement:

Working women and families in California’s 15th district hhave a champion in Congressman Eric Swalwell. In the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, he fought tirelessly to assist and protect victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. In Congress, he has already proven a critical leader in the drive to strengthen the health and economic security of America’s middle class, from his stalwart support for a comprehensive Violence Against Women Act to equal pay for equal work to investments in the education of our children. Eric’s creativity, leadership, and determination are essential to advancing House Democrats’ core priorities: creating jobs, strengthening small businesses, and growing our economy. I am proud to stand with Eric Swalwell.

It's still unclear who, if anyone, will challenge Swalwell in 2014. In the democratic heavy district, Swalwell is probably most vulnerable against another Democrat because of California's top-two primary system.

California Senate Majority Leader Ellen Corbett (D-San Leandro) might be Swalwell's most difficult challenger if she decides to run. Corbett reportedly setup a campaign committee to raise funds to challenge Swalwell.
