Justin Tran, a graduating senior at Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon, is the first recipient of the $2,000 DSRSD James B. Kohnen Scholarship and will receive his award Tuesday night, June 4, 2013, at the Dublin San Ramon Services District Board meeting.

Justin plans to study geophysics at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He has been a member of the National Honor Society since 2011, a camp counselor at Walker Creek Outdoor School since 2011, and captain of the football and track and field teams and vice president of the Gardening Club at Dougherty Valley High School.

DSRSD created the scholarship to inspire young people to study fields related to water resources. It is named for the late James B. Kohnen, a former member of the DSRSD Board of Directors, who devoted many years of his life to managing and protecting the public water supply and other vital resources.

In his scholarship application, Justin said, “By pursuing a degree in Earth Science with an emphasis in Geophysics, not only will I work towards solutions to Earth’s seemingly everlasting environmental problem, I will be able to share happiness through preservation of the outdoors for all human beings.”
