Video: Congressman Stark Makes an Accusation, But Can't Back it Up — Again

Minutes after claiming a Chronicle writer was contributing to Eric Swalwell's campaign, Rep. Pete Stark retracted the accusation.

Congressman Pete Stark visited with San Francisco Chronicle reporters and editors on Tuesday and claimed one writer, Debra J. Saunders, was contributing to his opponent's (Eric Swalwell) campaign.

When people in the room demanded he prove this, Stark looked at the papers in front of him and after an awkward few moments, retracted the accusation.

The Chronicle posted the video (above) of the incident on their Politics blog Tuesday.

This comes on the heels of Stark making another retraction, after while on the Dublin City Council from a prominent real-estate family in exchange for votes on zoning issues.

Stark couldn't prove the charge and .

Stark, Swalwell (both Democrats) and conservative Chris Pareja are competing for the open seat in the newly formed 15th Congressional District, which includes San Ramon, Dublin, Pleasanton, Livermore, Castro Valley, San Leandro and Union City.

The top two in June's primary election will compete in the general election.

Time to retire Pete.

He served and his time is over. Time to retire.

Pete Stark has done a spendid job of representing his constituents for over 30 years !!! The "Liberal Lion" can be counted upon to vigorishly support the liberal agenda that the vast majority of local voters hold dear !!! Rest assured that most if not all of his detractors never voted for him in the first place !!! I'd rather send Pete back to Congress where he has decades of experience than send a wet behind the ears Dublin City Councilman to Washington D.C. !!! What has Eric Swalwell ever done that would make him (or us) think he has the political expertise this position requires ??? Absolutely nothing !!!
J.T May 03, 2012 at 04:44 PM
I will vote for Congressman Stark, again. His voting record aligns with my beliefs. He has had some hiccups, but his hands are clean.
Longtime Resident May 03, 2012 at 04:49 PM
Luckily for us, his new district isn't nearly as liberal and a lot less likely to blindly vote for him yet again. Time for the "Liberal Lion" to hit the rest home.
Tim May 03, 2012 at 05:07 PM
What belief is that? That those of us who work and pay taxes should hand out money over and support lazy, habitual welfare recipients like yourself? I guess he is your guy then. I, on the other hand will be voting for Eric Swalwell.
Mike May 03, 2012 at 05:07 PM
Pete Stark is an arrogant creep and a liar who does not even live in California, let alone his district. Let's vote him out.
Tim May 03, 2012 at 05:09 PM
Yes, he lives in the state of Maryland. Perhaps he should be running there instead.
Steve May 03, 2012 at 05:43 PM
Pete Stark's hands are NOT clean. He lied when he accused Swalwell of taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes. Then he took almost 2 weeks to retract his accusation, but only when faced with a defamation lawsuit. Yes, he lives in Maryland on a 6 acre farm where he claims "Permanent Resident" status to lower his property taxes. His hands are NOT clean.
Johnny C. May 03, 2012 at 09:49 PM
I did not that he lives out of state now ? How does he keep in touch with his " people" then ? Know our likes/dislikes in the ever-changing political scene ? Humm .
Adam Reith May 03, 2012 at 11:30 PM
Pete Stark hasn't lived in the Bay Area in over 30 years. His "residence" is his in-laws house in San Lorenzo. He has been at the public trough for far too long and needs to retire so he can stop spending your money on his pet projects.
Steve May 03, 2012 at 11:53 PM
Not only that, in the last session of Congress he missed over 20% of the votes. At that rate he is not representing anybody.
Ron May 04, 2012 at 11:44 PM
The bigger question (which we've discussed in the past) is how can Pete LEGALLY live in MD and claim to represent us in CA?! As I understand it, he can live anywhere in CA, but he has to live in CA! So, is HE breaking the law and/or is someone else allowing him to LIVE in MD breaking the law? If he was a Republican, minimally, the media would be all over this issue! Instead, good old Pete gets a PASS and all the Democrats think this is just fine. Is this a "double standard" standard at its best? Isn't this a great way to run a "railroad" or worse, our government? If this kind of corruption and dishonesty from our elected officials doesn't improve (be eliminated), and the lack of concern from the voters isn't seen as a problem, then sooner than later our country will fall off the cliff of disinterest (by voters) and self-interest (by politicians)! Then all those who voted for the likes of good old Pete and his buddies will whine and complain that nobody is taking care of them, and that we can't do what we used to do in the "former" USA! No kidding Sherlock!
Ron May 05, 2012 at 04:19 AM
And just like Councilman Quirk said the other night in his candidate forum, Pete too has all the unions supporting him. Does that tell you something about what their goals are for the present and future? Keep their followers employed at the government watering hole regardless of the harm it will cause the rest of society. Spend, spend and spend as fast as you can to get the votes! Don't worry about the future. Don't worry about where the money is coming from, somebody (down the road) will pay for it! Politicians never work towards a long range solution, they always go for the "quick fix!" This will get them to the next election where they can ride in and "fix" the problem again...for a couple of years. Are we that self-centered that we will only think of ourselves instead of what the future will bring with this blind and wreckless spending? We cannot afford Pete or anyone who thinks like him!
Ron May 05, 2012 at 04:37 AM
While there seemed to be a little excitement when Ms. Saunders' name was mentioned, did you hear the casual laughing in the background and hear the way these folks were acting? They seemed pretty friendly. Pete was "their guy" and they let him off the hook pretty easily. It was like a "good old boys" meeting where Pete was there for everyone to re-enforce their objectives and how they were going to work to get him re-elected, while using the cover of being "hard charging" professional media folks! You just got a short view of how things work in the media, especially here in the Bay Area. Objective: get all liberals re-elected. Forget any logic in fiscal responsibility or moral character for honestly representing the whole community and its true needs. I've got to ask, why we're they asking him about why he lived in MD instead of CA where the law says he is supposed to live? I guess that issue isn't really "that" important, and those who vote for Pete don't really care where he lives as long as "...his voting record can can align..." with their beliefs! This is getting sick....
Brash Brazen May 08, 2012 at 11:37 AM
Steve or whoever he really is must be a shill of the Swalwell campaign or worse a Republican to open a Patch account just to malign our Congressman the Honorable Pete Stark. As a matter of fact everyone of your comments attack our beloved Congressman. While you criticize this great man his constituents have chosen him over countless & mostly forgotten challengers. You should be so lucky as to have the integrity & principles of the East Bay's "Liberal Lion".
Brash Brazen May 08, 2012 at 11:52 AM
They say when fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag & carrying a bible. Ron appears to be their minister of propaganda as he believes if he keeps repeating his specious rhetoric someone might mistake it for fact. Complaining about bias in media when you get your "fair & balanced" facts from FOX News is the height of hypocrisy. When your agenda is repeatably rejected by your neighbors all you can do is whine about liberals & bitch about the stupidity of those who dismiss you. It's actually kind of sad,I think I'm starting to tear up !
Tim May 08, 2012 at 06:05 PM
Yes Brash.... less Fox, more MSLSD. Do I have that about right? Nothing says "fair and balanced" like Ed "the red, who's overfed"... or perhaps Rachel Madcow... or Chris "I'll have another drink" Matthews... oh and my all time favorite, Al "not so" Sharpton. Yes sir, that's some hard news over at MSLSD.
Brash Brazen May 08, 2012 at 10:06 PM
Typical right-wing name calling by someone who can't handle the truth. At least MSNBC dispenses factual information unlike the GOP cheerleaders at FOX News. FOX NEWS isn't quite as "fair & balanced" as you are & your viewpoints are amongst the most extremely biased of anyone commenting here. You've wrapped the flag so tightly around you that it's apparently cutting off the flow of blood to your brain ! You're toxic agenda will be rejected by your neighbors at the ballot box once again this year,so it's time to start working on another rant about stupid liberal voters. Your deplorable attacks on every issue your neighbors hold dear encourages more people to abandon the Republican Party than my concise & heartfelt comments could ever hope to sway. Keep up the good work, you're killing what little is left of the GOP here !
Tim May 08, 2012 at 10:42 PM
I know, people who watch Fox News are so "toxic".... that's funny because Bill O'Reilly has the most watched cable news program on tv and it's been that way for over 10 years now. He outdraws CNN and MSNBC COMBINED for the 8pm hour and every other prime time slot Fox dominates CNN and MSNBC as well. But you're right, it's "toxic" and no one watches... those ratings don't mean anything anyway, right? And, yes, everyone has abandoned the Republican Party since Obama was anointed... you must have amnesia because the Democrat Party has their asses handed to them in November 2010. YOUR party lost over 60 Congressional seats and over 680 state legislative seats. There are now more GOP governors than Democrat governors. The 2010 election was a thumping for your party... the Democrats were all but wiped out in blue collar, working class, battleground states like Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, etc. Good luck this November... Obama can't even muster 50% in the polls as an incumbent... that's not good news... He will have coattails right down the ballot... coattails to the unemployment line.

"Pete" Stark is a shame to our congressional system. He is a hypocrate, defames people with no proof and has never voted for bills that benefit our country. Early in his career he was an advocate for school bussing. He was an advocate of forcing kids to be bussed while his own children were being chauffeured to a private. Stark is one of the most anti-American congressman in the house. Castro? Chavez? There isn't a marxist dictator that "U.S. Congressman" Stark does not back. He does not represent his district, he doesn't even live in California because the taxes are too high. Yet he votes for every tax increase bill.
