Spots Still Available for Youth Police Academy

Popular course gives teens an inside look at a day in the life of a police officer.

Eight spots are still available for local high school students to sign up for summer classes at the San Ramon Youth Policy Academy.

The Youth Academy gives high school students an inside look at law enforcement, allowing them to learn more about traffic stops, the use of force and community policing.

"I think it's a great program for kids interested in law enforcement as a career," said Officer Rob Ransom.

Graduates of the program Nitin Yenigalla, a 16-year-old junior at Cal High, and Kristin Staat, an 18-year-old senior at Cal High, both agree that the highlight was going to the simulation center in Concord.

The simulation center is like a virtual game for police officers, and is not often open to civilians, Ransom said.

"You get to see what the people protecting us in our city get to do," said Staat. "It's fun, not a lot of pressure and you get to see things you don't get to see everyday."

This year's camp runs from June 12 to July 2, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Contact Officer Rob Ransom at rransom@sanramon.ca.gov for additional information about signing up.
