San Ramon Valley HeartSafe Committee Teaching CPR at Cal High's Football Game Friday

The teachings will happen during halftime at the California High versus Monte Vista High football game on Friday.

For the first time, the San Ramon Valley HeartSafe Committee is teaching hands-only CPR and the proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at a local high school football game on Friday.

The teachings will happen at the halftimes during California High's home junior varsity and varsity games against Monte Vista High. It's being done in honor of National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Month.

"This is the first time we have done this at a football game and we hope to do it throughout the district in the future — at San Ramon Valley, Monte Vista and Dougherty Valley," San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District spokesman Kimberly French said.

Over 300,000 Americans fall victim to sudden cardiac arrest each year, learning CPR and how to use an AED can quite possibly mean the difference between life and death.

“CPR is something everyone should learn, like riding a bike or learning to swim,” said Joe Farrell, San Ramon Valley HeartSafe Committee member and sudden cardiac arrest survivor.  “I was fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time to save someone using CPR and then just a year later to have some else use their knowledge of CPR to save me.”
