San Ramon Opens New Police Station, Permit Center
San Ramon takes advantage of the recession to purchase a single location to house the police station and other departments.
You could call it a "coming together" of city government in San Ramon.
That was the feeling Sunday afternoon at the grand opening of the new San Ramon Police Department and Permit Center at 2401 Crow Canyon Road.
The station has been open since July. The police station takes up 36,000 square feet of the facility while the remaining 24,000 square feet houses the city's permit center, which includes San Ramon’s planning, building, engineering, transportation and economic development departments.
The police department has 58 sworn officers and a total of 78 employees.
“Operationally, it definitely helps everyone being under one roof. It facilitates communication,” said Capt. Joe Gorton.
Before July, the police station had been located at City Hall. The other departments were scattered throughout different office buildings in San Ramon.
“We can only accomplish things by working together. San Ramon is a family working together,” said Mayor H. Abram Wilson.
The building was paid for with redevelopment funds. It was purchased in 2010 for $7.14 million. The total cost after renovation was $10 million, or about $167 per square foot. Comparable new buildings cost from $400 to $800 per square foot.
“It used to be a professional office building,” said interim city engineer Brian Bornstein. “We were lucky we got the building when we did.”
