San Ramon Man Charged With Tax Fraud

A federal indictment handed down this week accuses Thomas A. Calise of tax evasion and forging IRS documents.

A San Ramon entrepreneur faces federal charges of tax evasion for allegedly lying to the IRS about his income and assets.

Thomas Anthony Calise was arrested Tuesday. A federal indictment accuses him of failing to file tax returns, obstructing IRS laws.

The indictment says Calise avoided paying income tax in 2001 and 2002 by hiding an IRS lien on his property and sending a fraudulent release of that lien to convince a lender to let him refinance.

Calise also lied to IRS agents about how much he made and what he owned, according to the indictment.

From 2004 to 2007, Calise's gross income exceeded IRS filing requirements but he didn't file tax returned in any of those years, according to federal prosecutors.

Calise also used a fake name – Thomas Goldfoos – and made-up Social Security number to refinance some property and obtain loans, according to the indictment.

If convicted, Calise could face several years in federal prison and fines in the amount of hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to the U.S. Office of the Attorney General.
