Report of Sexual Assault on Madrone Trail

A woman reported being raped on the East Bay Regional Park trail on Wednesday.

Local residents are concerned about a report that on Wednesday a woman was raped on an East Bay Regional Park District trail.

Patch could not reach park police for comment but was contacted by readers asking if the report is true. KTVU is reporting this morning that because of an assault security has been increased at Madrone Trail. The trail is accessible via Bollinger Canyon Road from the west and Camille Avenue from the east between Danville and Alamo.

According to the Park Police report being circulated among San Ramon Valley residents: A woman hiking at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday passed a man with a dog coming from the opposite direction.

She said the man grabbed her hair from behind, pulled her down onto the ground, pinned her down and assaulted her.

She described him as a white man in his early 40s with short light brown hair, clean-shaven, with a pointed nose and light olive complexion. He was of medium build, about 5 foot 10 and weighing about 180 pounds.

He was wearing a tan and cream button up shirt, blue jeans and dark colored tennis shoes. He had a silver watch on his left wrist.

The dog was described as heavy set, medium-sized brown and white with one ear up and the other down.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Bermudez at 510-690-6562.

Why are women still going alone to these trails...like it or not is isn't safe.

At 3:30 in the afternoon?! I guess we aren't supposed to go anywhere at any time with out a buddy. Why do we continue to tell women not to be raped instead of telling men not to rape? This is terrible.

Ah sure. Great advice. Let me guess. You also helped Ford with its decision to market the Edsel.

Right EC, how dare she leave the kitchen!

I'ne hiked the trails in Las Trampas over 30 years...and was doing so weekly until a stroke waylaid me 2 years ago. I was accompanied on my Sunday hikes by my (grown) daughter and her friends, and a number of women who work for Tri-Valley Haven for women, a non-profit supporting the Tri-Valley Area with a SART (Sexual Assault Response Team), a 7x24 rape crisis hotline, counseling, etc. So I am aware of the type 'bad things' that occur. It shouldn't come as a surprise that Las Trampas is as dangerous as other spots. Reading of this greatly saddens me, proving that no matter how beautiful and peaceful it seems, at times, or at least at this time, it isn't.

I went hiking there yesterday with my family. We were stopped by a couple hiking past wanted to let us know what had happened so that we would be extra cautious. As we left we saw a paper hanging on the fence (as we walked out to our car on Camille Avenue) describing the event. When we got home my husband and I googled the incident and found nothing. We were outraged that this has not been further publicized. There should be more of a public safety message than an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper hanging on a fence. This happened 5 days ago! I am warning all of my outdoor enthusiast female friends today. Otherwise, they would not know that there is a very scary predator in our vicinity. Please spread the word...

This is terrible. There is no reason ANYONE should not be able to take a hike in peace. I hope they catch this POS ASAP. This could have happened to my wife/sister. This woman is someones family. Prayers to her and her family. May the perp be caught and thrown into prison with no chance of parole. This animal needs to be put down.

My Fiance and I frequent the Edelberry trail. Sometimes I hike well in front of her, we both try to challenge ourselves on the steep climb, sometimes I'm 10-15 mins ahead of her. I always make sure she has some sort of protection with her. (Pocket knife) mountain lions were our only worry. If I felt someone Suspicous was on the trail I would double back to her. I won't let this episode change our workout routine. Don't wear headphones in both ears! Stay vigilant, hike with friends. East Bay regional parks has laws against weapons in the park. We will always bring a knife of some sort in a backpack. This loser won't strike twice in the same spot. Women, don't wear sexy workout outfits on the trail. Lets hope for a sketch of this guy. I'm invisioning his dog is an Australian Shepard mix or German Shepard mix, I see quit a few of these dogs with one ear up, the other down.

As a defensive tactics instructor I am constantly amazed that more people don't seek continuous training. It's horrible that we have to think that learning to defend ourselves is more important than going to the gym or golfing or even cardio kickbox/Zumba etc. We live in wonderful communities on this side of the Dublin grade but as I often say where does the Hungary lion go to feed......

Carry pepper spray!
calligirl December 18, 2012 at 01:23 am
What is your opinion of the use of pepper spray or a stun gun for a woman who often does training walk/runs on her own? Never really considered one but am starting to now.

There's something fishy about this...

I wonder if there have been other rapes in the area that can be linked to this man? I hike this trail (and others) with my dog all the time, without fear. Now I am hesitant, but will continue. I refuse to live in fear and restrict my access to the beautiful trails. Would pepper spray really stop a madman?

Thank you, Ron! I sometimes think I live in paradise here in the TriValley, but just reading the police report on Patch, that is clearly not the case. For everything that actually gets reported, I can only imagine how many crimes we never hear about.
Georgia Choate December 18, 2012 at 02:35 pm
It will be a week tomorrow since this was "reported." Does anyone know if she actually reported this to police? If that entire description of the man, the dog, etc, is hearsay from residents, who knows how much of that actually came from the woman's statement.

I saw this story reported on television news reports twice so I would definitely consider it a valid incident and not just rumor.
When attacks occurred in Walnut Creek it was more widely and frequently publicized. I guess the news networks are too busy covering all the recent shootings Oregon, Oakland, SF, Conn. to give this much time.

FYI, the information in the story comes directly from the EBRPD police incident report.

Here is the most recent information from the EBRPPD: http://dublin.patch.com/announcements/investigation-of-reported-sexual-assault-on-madrone-trail

Autumn, thanks for the nifty link. Of course what the link says is
"the department does not believe there is any extraordinary risk or danger to anyone using Las Trampas Regional Park or living nearby. The police department is continuing extra patrols of the area." "Due to the confidential nature of this type of investigation, the EBRPD police department is not able to share any of the information that has been developed." "There is no history of any similar incidents being reported at Las Trampas for at least the past five years. Any inquiries can be directed to EBRPD Police Lieutenant Jon King at 510-690-6552." Unknown and undisclosable are not assaul or rape. Could this be that it is one more example of over reaction or some version that may not in fact be a rape or assault? If that is the case, this story really needs to take a different track. If this is the same sort of thing that happened in Palo Alto, it was not rape and not assault and was definitely the type of incident that should have resulted in charges against the idiot that called the cops. Rape and assault are bad things. Making up stuff and villifying folks is just as bad. People should always practice safety while using the regional parks. It is always best to hike with a friend or with your dog, carry your cell phone with you, be aware of your surroundings and insure that someone knows where you are hiking so that we know where to look if you become overdue for any reason.

Same here Singing Feather! I'm a hiker and always looking for new places to hike. Now I want to hike that trail. I dare him to lay a finger on this girl!
