Las Trampas Raid Nets Thousands of Marijuana Plants

Police recovered about $1 million worth in drugs, according to the East Bay Regional Parks District.

East Bay Regional Park police officers found $1 million worth of marijuana plants Friday when they raided a growing operation in a remote ravine in the Las Trampas Regional Wilderness, police said.

Police said they found about 3,300 plants in the raid, which was conducted at 4 a.m. in an area between Castro Valley and San Ramon. No arrests were made.

That's a bigger than average haul, according to parks police Capt. Mark Ruppenthal. Authorities find about one such crop a year in Las Trampas – a 5,342 park with lots of trees, valleys and ravines.

Park police conduct daily patrols of the park property. The 3,300 plants were spotted by helicopter during routine patrols, Ruppenthal said. An elaborate irrigation system that tapped into the park's water supply was watering the crops.

"It used up enough water for us to notice a drain on our system," Ruppenthal said.

The irrigation system used PVC pipes to tap into natural springs and covered "quite a distance," Ruppenthal said. "It's absolutely elaborate."

The plants found Friday grew in a ravine, partially obscured by trees, police said. Marijuana needs a lot of sunlight to grow, so they can't be completely hidden.

These operations concern the park district because suspects remove  native plants and use fertilizer, poisons and pesticides, according to police.

Budgets cuts have forced the parks department to cut some positions, Ruppenthal said. But he's still not clear how much of an affect that's had on his agency's ability to patrol the area.

"We'll have a better idea in a couple of weeks," he said. "We're looking into that."

The plants were taken to an undisclosed location and destroyed.

Anyone with information about the growing operation is asked to East Bay Regional Parks Police at (510) 881-1833.

A lot of you mistake hedonistic pleasures for freedom. Sure push back against unreasonable laws, but to say that no terrorists have been caught by the TSA is somewhat negated by the fact there has not been a succesful attack on US soil since 9/11. I am much more afraid of powerful drug cartels and there ability to take over legitamate governments then i am of said govt. without criminal influence. Communism was a vast criminal enterprise where the criminal class and the ruling class enjoyed all the benefits of power by the use of terror against the populace. I don't see how any of you are being terrorized by your inability to smoke pot.

Terry may be wrong about her percentages, but her premise is right on. Limbaugh lives in a mansion in a gated community and gets all the drugs he wants and then some. The rest of us live in the real world. White people are not the only ones using illegal drugs so you need some fact checking done as well.

Mike, why do you have such a hard on for Libertarians? Why do you like to stereotype so readily? Do you also think black people are lazy welfare recipients and Jews have big noses? Are all Hispanics "illegal Mexicans" to you as well? Just because someone has a problem with pointless and problematic drug laws does not automatically make them a "Libertarian".
You remind me of our esteemed 43rd President, who was fond of prefacing his assertions and conjecture with, "some people", i.e. establishing a false basis for his forthcoming comment to lend it credibility or pertinence. You do the same thing, but you specifically go after Libertarians. Please explain yourself.

I can't help but agree with David here. I can recognize common sense when I see it. If putting a seed that God provided to Man in the ground and consuming the resulting foliage is a crime then please add "God" to any complaint filed in court.
Chumba Wamba July 16, 2011 at 03:54 pm
I should add that I also agree with JoAnne to an extent. If someone uses the public lands for their own interests then I want to be able to also. We can't all use it for whatever we want, so there has to be some rules that we can agree by for its use. The trouble is, the government is the custodian of this land, and the government has quite clearly demonstrated it is insane, so I can't agree with the their (mis)management of our (ostensibly) public lands.

You just inadvertently described contemporary America. Want me to come lift the rock beneath which you're living? Must be stuffy under there...

Oh god help us it"s the know it all wally wonka. did you not see the word "some" prefaced before libertarians. why don't you and david get together and do another bowlful of bliss and leave the thinkin to those of us with a clear head.

Not sure why no one can just have a civil online debate without hurling insults. The bottom line is that drugs, just like prostitution are never going to go awayentirely and making them illegal makes things actually more dangerous and wastes more resources.
Now obviously there are a lot of drugs that should NOT be legalized, but marijuana is definitely not one of them. Two of the most addictive drugs, nicotine and alcohol are legal so explain that one to me??? If Marijuana were completely legal (for the record I don't smoke pot) then main stream companies would start producing and selling it. They would have their own private land to grow it on. Their pricing would be so much lower that the illegal growers would go out of business and would have no interest in growing it all let alone on private land. Hence, our government wouldn't be wasting time on this and could focus on more important things. Now for those of you who think this is absurd let me ask you this - how many people are making alcohol in the basement of their home for resale and I'm not talking about beer enthusiasts trying to create a home brew. The answer of course is none! The reason is they would not be able to compete with companies making it legally. I would rather see alcohol made illegal and pot legal. As far as I know people do not die from "Marijuana Poisining" and I'm sure there would be less vehicle related deaths as well.
SR July 16, 2011 at 06:29 pm
Hmmm. Legalize marijuana so none of this will happen you say. OK, so answer this for me. Would I buy legal marijuana that is "Made in America" with all the costs of regulation, taxes and consumer safety oversight built in? Or would I buy marijuana still grown clandestinely in parks and the stuff grown in Mexico and smuggled across the border by Mexican Nationals for one quarter the price? I'm guessing once it is all legal the potheads (i.e. unemployed) and most of the younger kids will opt for the cheaper stuff and none of these problems will go away. We will be left with the same criminal groups growing cheap stuff while the higher quality weed can be consumed “legally” by those with a little more cash. The only benefit will be a small tax revenue bump (as most people will still buy the cheap untaxed stuff). The downside is a lot more lazy yet otherwise able-bodied Americans clogging up the entrances to coffee houses arguing over who should win American Idol. Just because you guys are sitting around a smoke filled room, stoned to the bejesus, agreeing with each other that you have found the all elusive answer that will make the rest of us go along with legalization doesn't make it so in the I work for a living and have responsibilities real world. Keep trying...
And yes, alcohol causes way more deaths but people have died from marijuana poisining and people do cause accidents while under the influence of just marijuana. There are several examples of both you can Google.

Oh yeah. Nice work EBRPP.
John DeKoven July 16, 2011 at 06:53 pm
My opening line to my post was "Not sure why no one can just have a civil online debate without hurling insults" and you have proved just that. You say "just because you guys..." when I clearly stated I do not smoke pot, so that just proves my opening point.
Anyways let me answer your question with a question that I actually answered in my post. Right now where do the unemployed and younger kids get alcohol? Yes they get it from the store made my companies who are making it legally. If your point was correct why aren't they getting alcohol that is illegally smuggled in or made illegally on farms somewhere? Also it's funny how you describe potheads as unemployed. So first off what you are saying is that someone who likes to smoke pot once in a while is a "pothead" so that would be like saying that anyone who likes to have an occasional drink is an "alcoholic". Secondly you are saying anyone that smokes pot is not productive in society which is so far from the truth you obviously aren't aware of it. I can personally tell you that some of the biggest high tech companies in the world have many executives who smoke pot and there are plenty of millionaires who do as well. Just like alcohol there are plenty of people who can be highly effective and plenty who are not. However, you immediately characterize anyone who smoke pot is ineffective. At least you agree that alcohol causes way more deaths and while there may be some from marijuana it is minor in comparison.
John DeKoven July 16, 2011 at 06:56 pm
I do want to add that for the people who think it's easy to keep people from illegally growing marijuana in those lands it is not. Not only that it is very dangerous for the agencies involved because it isn't as simple as "flying above". They can't catch anyone that way. They need to go on ground which is very, very dangerous. These growers shoot to kill. Just another reason to legalize it and get rid of it all.

Commenters, if you want to share information and opinions, that's great. The minute you begin insulting each other and letting anger take over, it's time to back away and cool off. Now I must turn myself to the unpleasant task of reading what you all have done in search of comments that violate our terms of service. If you imagine me with loads of time on my hands and staff to help, you're way off. I would much rather be doing many, many other things right now, ideally with my family, on this so-called day off. Please show some maturity and self-restraint. These are your own neighbors; please treat one another with courtesy and respect.

Lauren Edwards July 16, 2011 at 07:43 pm
Sarah, you're doing fine. Most of you are, actually. In my survey just now, I found many comments backed by reasoning and facts. Keep it up. Only a few of you are succumbing to name-calling and exaggeration. Please watch it.

I'm afraid of a government that would allow it to be taken over by drug cartels.
We haven't had successful attach on USA soil since 9/11 is not true. Only instead of foreigner attacking the USA, it's the government of the USA attacking its citizens by slowly eroding our freedoms and rights. As Mr Ben Franklin said: They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.
SR July 16, 2011 at 09:54 pm
So aside from the few millionaires and CEO's you are friends with let's agree the rest of the people smoking pot are unemployed and lazy. I smoked my share of pot back in the day and I was lazy when I did so. EVERYONE I know that still smokes pot and EVERYONE I see smoking pot in public for "medical reasons" is sitting around doing nothing. Anyone who knows anything about pot will admit behind closed doors potheads are lazy and for the most part stupid. There is a scientific study from UCLA titled "Marijuana Makes You Stupid" that proves my point 100%.
Ok, so I made up the part about about there being a study but you know it's true!
John DeKoven July 16, 2011 at 10:10 pm
SR, we are just going to have to agree to disagree. Yes Alcoholics may not be as mellow or get the munchies, but they are just as if not more socially disfunctional (if that's the label you want to use). Bottom line is I would much rather be with someone who is stoned vs drunk (drunkness leads to unpredictability and violent outbursts). If I had absolutely no choice I would rather be in a car with someone who is stoned vs drunk (stoners will drive much more carefully). Also not that I'm some eco nut, but we can agree that marijuana is much friendlier for the environment than alcohol. To me I just can't see how someone can rationalize alcohol being legal and pot not. They either both should be or both shouldn't be.
By the way you never answered my question about where unemployed people and kids get alcohol :-)
Chumba Wamba July 16, 2011 at 10:12 pm
You didn't address my comment. You simply employed more ad hominem, which in the short time I've observed you seems to be your preferred method of communication. Let us know when you have something relevant to add that isn't based on emotion and your irrational distrust of Libertarians.
mike July 17, 2011 at 12:55 am
lauren- are you going to let sarah sloan's post stay on this sight? i find it offensive she would use the word "ass" here in a demeaning fashion and you would tell her that she's doing fine. Now that It is "inappropriate"

Sarah, We are deleting your comment for the use of profanity. Feel free to resubmit it without it. Everyone, please read our terms of service so we don't have to worry about monitoring language and can let this interesting discussion continue.

Studies have been done (sorry, don't have a reference) that show pot can increase driving safety.
As far as legalization, I say no. I prefer decriminalization. "Legalization" is control by the state. It's an herb, no different than basil or oregano. Decriminalize it.
Chumba Wamba July 17, 2011 at 02:11 am
Hahaha! Marijuana poisoning, eh? Sounds painful. No such thing. You'd have to consume an elephant's worth of pot in one sitting to get a toxic dose. No one has ever died from smoking too much weed. Ever.
Yes, people have accidents if they are unexperienced and unused to the effect pot has on a person. However, it is possible to "master" it and achieve higher levels of performance on specific tasks. You can't know unless you do.
Chumba Wamba July 17, 2011 at 02:16 am
I guess it depends who you know. All my pot smoking buds are hard working and successful. We need to smoke pot to put up with the rest of society, whom we find dumb and slow. Go figure, SR.
Chumba Wamba July 17, 2011 at 02:19 am
See? This is a perfect example of people who just need to smoke some pot. Seriously. It is there for a reason. Chill, people.

"I apprehend no danger to our country from a foreign foe . . . Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter. From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence, I must confess that I do apprehend some danger. I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing. Make them intelligent, and they will be vigilant; give them the means of detecting the wrong, and they will apply the remedy."

I think I would almost rather listen to the Nazi banter than listen to someone spouse the virtues of being a drug addict.
mike July 17, 2011 at 01:38 pm
Amazing! Sarah who by all appearances is the definition of a "cyberbully" with name calling and personal attacks is given a pass for bad behaivor again very inappropriate. In her defense is at least she is offensive across the political spectrum.
mike July 17, 2011 at 02:08 pm
You are sick lady, why they let a name calling nothing like you take over these forums is beyond me. You calling me a Nazi is like the proverbial pot calling the kettle black.
