Officers Involved in July 8 Shooting Back on Duty

Four police from San Ramon and seven from the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office have been on the job again since the middle of the month, days after the standoff that ended with a fatal shooting.

Eleven officers placed on paid leave after shooting to death a gunman in San Ramon earlier this month have been back at work, some since July 12.

Four officers are from the San Ramon police department and seven are Contra Costa County Sheriff's deputies, including three from the Danville police force.

All were given time off after the July 8 shooting, which began when a former California High School student, Joe Baumgardner, holed himself up in 7-Eleven on San Ramon Valley Boulevard, guzzled beer and then leveled a 9mm at police.

Cops fired back, killing the man on the spot.

Police Chief Scott Holder would not disclose the number of times the 24-year-old was shot, though reports to the San Ramon Patch say there were 37 shots fired.

"I don't know until the investigation is complete, which will be a few more weeks," Holder said.

Authorities would only go so far as to say there were several shots fired.

There will be a coroner's inquest into the shooting, though it may not take place for another three to six months, said Dep. Jimmy Lee, spokesman for the sheriff's office.

The autopsy report won't be released until after the inquest, a hearing where all the facts of the case will be laid out before a judge. The inquest will be open to the public.

Until then, because it's an open case, police won't disclose any more details about the shooting.

"Once the investigation is completed by all parties involved, it will be reviewed and I will make a determination as to any further information being released prior to the coroner's inquest," Holder said.
