A man is in custody after allegedly driving after San Ramon police officers after stealing valuables from parked cars in a neighborhood off Bollinger Canyon Road on Nov. 11

Justin Ray Nicholson, 30, is in police custody.

The suspect was allegedly walking up and down Paddock Drive early Monday morning checking unlocked cars for valuables.

There had been reports of car thefts in the area, police say.

Officers were called to the scene when a neighbor spotted a suspicious briefcase in the street around 4 a.m.

When police arrived on the scene, the briefcase was gone and two people in a car were driving toward them.

Police "dashed out of the way," of the vehicle and the driver accelerated and drove off, only to crash into a curb a few blocks away.

The suspects fled the scene by foot, but police recovered their identities from items left in the car. Police also found valuables in the vehicle that matched those reported stolen.
