Dublin High Grad Dies In I-580 Crash

Aryel Amin, 19, was killed in the accident Friday afternoon on westbound Interstate 580.

A 19-year-old Dublin woman was killed in aon Interstate 580 Friday afternoon.

The Alameda County coroner's office identified the woman as Aryel Noorzad Amin.

The accident occurred in the westbound lanes of I-580 near Fallon Avenue. The crash occurred about 3:05 p.m.

Amin was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where she was pronounced dead at 5:53 p.m., according to the coroner's office.

Amin graduated from Dublin High School in 2011. She played on the girl's volleyball team there. She was also editor of the school yearbook last year.

A Facebook page has been established in memory of Amin. A YouTube video in her memory has also been posted.

Mayor Tim Sbranti taught Amin in his leadership class at Dublin High. He said she was an intelligent, outgoing and capable student.

"It's an incredible tragedy," said Sbranti. "She was an amazing young woman with a lot of potential."

Sbranti said he spoke to a number of teens at the St. Patrick's Day festival today. All are having a tough time dealing with Amin's death.

"It's touched a lot of people," said Sbranti.

Kelly Zummo, a guidance counselor at Fallon Middle School, knew Amin when she attended school there.

Zummo said Amin was a personable and popular student.

"She was a great kid. She had a lot of personality and was well-liked," said Zummo.

Zummo said Amin worked at a local In-N-Out Burger. She believed she was attending Las Positas Community College.

Amin has an older sister and a younger brother. Her mother, Marina Amin, died of cancer in December 2010, Zummo said.

Steve Creel, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol, said Amin had apparently just driven onto the westbound lanes of I-580 from the Fallon Avenue on-ramp when the accident occurred.

Creel said Amin's 1995 white Toyota somehow turned and became perpendicular to oncoming traffic. It was struck just behind the driver's door by a 2001 Ford SUV driven by a 20-year-old Tracy woman. That driver was not seriously injured.

Creel said Amin was not ejected from the vehicle. He added it appears she was not wearing a seat belt.

Two dogs were in Amin's car. One of them was killed. The other was not seriously hurt.

Creel said the freeway was relatively dry at the time despite a heavy rain that fell about 1:30 p.m.

Well, they yanked my comment but I was going to say that I did NOT call her stupid. However, she DID make a stupid decision--and it was a life ending one. And on, I have never, ever driven without wearing a seatbelt. I'm sorry for your loss, and I hope that your wish for me to be murdered is only your emotions speaking, because if you are serious, then you are committing a crime by making a threat like that (hmmm, my innocent comment was yanked by the Patch, but not yours? Interesting.)

I-580 between Altamont Pass and Dublin is a death trap. It was never designed to handle the volume of traffic it presently carries from beyond Sacramento and Modesto every day. Two deaths in two days? CALTRANS needs to find alternate routes and upgrades. The CHP needs to cover this danger zone more heavily to limit speeds. Drivers from both directions should be warned they are entering an extreme highway hazard area and to reduce speeds. Not popular but may save lives.
