Family Freebies: Art and Wind, Youth Concert and Parks

Fun For the Family, from crafts to parks to festivals

Ready for some more May free activities to fill up those afternoons and weekends? Here are some great options for the rest of May?

runs their free Saturday crafts from 1-3 p.m., featuring a different activity each week. On May 19, your child can use scratch art to make a creature of his or her choice.  Just in time for Memorial Day, your youngster can return on May 26 to make a patriotic wand. Lakeshore Learning is in Walnut Creek.

On May 21, at the in San Ramon, families can enjoy a free concert. The young symphony will amaze the audience with 45 young performers sharing their love of music and instruments with onlookers.

Speaking of Memorial Day, consider the annual Art and Wind Festival held each Memorial Day weekend at Central Park in San Ramon. This annual event has many free craft activities for children, usually found in the shade of the trees near the tennis courts.

This fun festival takes place on Sunday and Monday, May 27 and 28 from 10:00-5:00.  Want to get up really early on Monday, May 28?  If so, get to Central Park in time for a hot air balloon launch, scheduled form sometime between 6:30-7:30— a sight to see!

As the weather gets warmer and the nights get longer, consider an outdoor activity for your family. We are fortunate to have lots of great parks around, and many of them feature water to cool down. in Dublin is a great spot where kids can wear their swimsuits and hop into the water. Plus, they have barbecue grills that can turn a park day into a dinner cookout! This park is at 11600 Shannon Way, right off of San Ramon road.

Another great family park is in Danville, called “Snake Park” by my own children and countless others. There is water to play in, multiple play structures, and lots of green grass and sports fields. Bring a ball or a kite for some family fun. Diablo Vista is located at 1000 Tassajara Ranch Road in Danville.

in San Ramon is also a hit for families, though there is no water play here.  There are tennis courts, rock climbing, grassy fields, and swing.  They will delight your children and the child within in you!  This hidden gem can be found on Albion Road in the Windemere development.

Have fun exploring, both indoors and out, as May winds down into June.
