Elaine's Fave Five Features

If you're new to Patch, you may have missed some of our recent feature articles. Patch will post links to cool stories, slide shows and videos. These five favorites were chosen by the author.

Watching as the sheep all get a shave and a hair cut every Spring, has become a fun family outing. The sheep are rounded up, most of them running willy nilly all over the pasture, with a very trained border collie rounding them up into the pen. After you have watched the sheep getting their wool clipped, attendees can wander the farm grounds, listen to fun live music and even get a tractor or train ride.

Patriotic residents find everything they need, all within a short driving distance, every Fourth of July. Early on the Fourth there’s the annual walk and run fun event in San Ramon, then a patriotic holiday parade down Danville Boulevard in Danville. Finally, there’s my evening favorite, the awe inspiring, brilliant fireworks display, sponsored by the City of San Ramon. After a day like this everyone, young and old alike, will go home feeling very patriotic!

Facebook isn’t just for socializing or playing Farmville, there are some other very useful uses for the infamous site — especially if you are sticking to your budget. Many businesses are using Facebook and Twitter to advertise their products, services, and specials. If you have a favorite local business, they probably have a Facebook fan page. Be sure to “like” the page so you’ll keep track of what the deal of the day is!!

Neil Armstrong Elementary School Principal, Lorna Monteith raised more than $15,000 during a walk-a-thon. The students received a very unique prize for their fundraising efforts. They could witness their principal have her hair dyed blue, dress her up in a Halloween costume, or have buckets of green slime dumped on her. You guessed it, the kids voted for the sliming, all caught on this video, and all for a good cause.

Pig races at the annual Alameda Fair is a big hit with any family and these pigs are raring to race. They run, oinking and squealing to the finish line with everyone cheering for their favorite. After the race the pigs patiently sit for photos with their fans. Nearby there’s Mutton Bustin’ for fair attendees under 60 pounds. Kids can ride a sheep rodeo-style, trying desperately to hang on to a bucking sheep for 6 seconds is not as easy as it looks.
