Freebies for the Family in the New Year

From Home Depot to the library, there are plenty of free activities for the family in the new year.

It’s a new year and new activities await families in the Tri-Valley. Check out some of the free and fun activities around town over the next few weeks.

As always, offers a free carpentry workshop the first Saturday of each month, which falls on Jan. 7. Kids between 5-12 can come in between 9 a.m. and noon and make a project, earn a pin, and get a free apron. Get there early, as sometimes Boy Scouts or other groups come in for group projects and materials go quickly.

The hosts family storytime the first Saturday of each month, as well. From 11:15-12:00, you and your child can hear a selection of stories, sing songs, and even make a craft to take home.

Each Wednesday in January, your middle schooler can head to the San Ramon library right after school, at 2:20 p.m., for a free movie. Is Thursday better for your middle schooler? If so, then head to the at 3:15 p.m. for their middle school movie time. Movies are chosen weekly and range from G to PG-13.

Bring your singing voice to the on Saturday, Jan. 7 for “Music Dan’s Sing Along”. Join Dan, librarians, and other families in the library reading room from 3 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. for sing along fun.

Lakeshore Learning Store in Walnut Creek continues to host free crafts each Saturday for kids from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Jan. 7, your child can make a 2012 calendar. On Jan. 14, your child can learn more about Martin Luther King Jr. by creating a multi-cultural flower pot. They are located at 1929 Mt. Diablo Boulevard in Walnut Creek.

Willing to head to Berkeley? Check out the Berkeley Rep’s Sunday Sampler on Sunday, Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. After a brief introduction, participants can sample four different classes from 1 p.m to  2:30 p.m. Go here to learn more about this free family event.

On Saturday, Jan. 14 at 10 a.m., Lowe’s in Pleasanton/Dublin offers a woodworking project. Kids can make a castle, complete with stickers and paperboard cutouts. Plus, participants also receive an apron and goggles, while supplies last.  Visit their web site here to learn more.
