Preschool kids in the San Ramon Valley raised over 50 teddy bears last week to give to homeless children in the Bay area for Christmas.
The local non-profit co-op, Valley Parent Preschool, joined forces with other local non-profits in the area to give teddy bears, books and blankets to less-privileged children through 'Project Night Night', a Bay-area non-profit.
"You can see it teaching these kids compassion," said fundraising chair Hallie Han, whose son attends the preschool.
Valley Parent preschoolers visited their teddy bears one last time on Dec. 11 before they were distributed to Project Pride in Oakland and the Asian Women's Shelter of San Francisco.
Rather than competing for money, different non-profits worked together to raise money locally.
"We don't just work here, we live here," said Margie Perry, the Danville Branch manager for Community Bank.
The bank played a big role in raising money ($1,500 by their estimate) to provide capes for critically and terminally ill children who have to spend the holidays in the hospital with the Danville-based 'Capes 4 Heroes' organization.
Capes 4 Heroes founder Barbara Casados will be working on capes to present to children in Oakland in early 2014.
"The town of Danville literally wraps its arms around my organization," said Casados, who is also a Valley Parent Preschool parent.
