Community Corner

Relay For Life - San Ramon

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities around the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease.

Relay For Life is a 24 hour event to remind us that cancer never sleeps.

Individuals and teams will camp out at the California High School athletic track on June 23-24 with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track at all times throughout the event.

Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their campsites or donate items to the silent auction during Relay.

Relay brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups . . . people from all walks of life – all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives by helping people stay well, by helping them get well, and by finding cures.

Funds raised at Relay For Life of San Ramon enable the American Cancer Society to impact the lives of those touched by cancer within the community.

Relay For Life begins with a Survivor and CareGiver lap around the track – a chance for us to celebrate our survivors and say Thank You to our very important CareGivers.

The day is filled with lively music, games, educational and inspirational messages, and of course, walking.

The Luminaria Ceremony takes place after sundown on Saturday, honoring the community’s cancer survivors and remembering those lost to the disease. Participants will walk a track that is surrounded with glowing luminary bags that bear the name and sometimes a picture of someone who has battled cancer. A suggested donation of $5 will purchase a bag for decoration or you may have someone at the Relay For Life event decorate a bag for you.

Also a part of San Ramon’s Relay For Life event is the “Fight Back” Ceremony, in which a community member will inspire Relay participants with his or her own personal story or commitment and will challenge them to take a personal pledge of action (e.g., stop smoking, eat healthier foods, exercise regularly, have a medical exam, etc.) in fighting back.
