Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace (2000)

Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace is the compelling story of one man's struggle against Nazism and its intimidation of the German Church. Dietrich Bonhoeffer's legacy includes a poignant body of work that documents his struggle to determine the will of God and his exemplary calm and concern for others as he faced the prospect of his own death. Posthumously he became an inspiration for people like Desmond Tutu, Vaclav Havel and Martin Luther King, Jr.

More than just a biographical film, it sheds light on  the little-known German resistance during WWII. Directed by Edward Till, it was shot in Germany, The Czech Republic, Berlin and Canada. Ulrich Tukur plays Bonhoeffer. Justus von Dohnányi, who plays Eberhard Bertheg, is a great-nephew of the real Dietrich Bonhoeffer as well as grandson of Hans von Dohnányi, who is portrayed by Ulrich Noethen.

In 1930 Bonhoeffer did postgraduate work at New York City's Union Theological Seminary. He heard Adam Clayton Powell, Sr. preach the Gospel of Social Justice. He visited Mexico, Italy, Libya, Spain and Cuba which opened him to ecumenism. In English; unrated; run time 90 minutes. Join us for popcorn during, discussion after.
