Plan Now for Pet Safety: Local Vet Hosts Pet Disaster Preparedness Seminar

Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center & Urgent Care is partnering with the San Ramon Fire Department to educate pet owners on how to plan and prepare for their pet’s wellbeing in the aftermath of a disaster. The event is free of charge and will take place Thursday, May 30th from 6:30pm to 7:30pm at Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center. SRFD Emergency Coordinator Danielle Bell will discuss evacuation planning, how to prepare, and community resources. Dr. Kristel Weaver will go over pet first aid items and how to use them properly. “Events such as Hurricane Katrina and the recent tragedy in Oklahoma taught us how important it is to be prepared and especially with our pets,” states Danielle. “It’s vital for pet owners to be informed and this event will give them the education and tools they need to be aware. Bishop Ranch Vet has been an excellent team player in the Tri-Valley and this event highlights how much they care and want people to be connected and comfortable handling emergency situations.”  

The hospital has been promoting disaster preparedness essentials such as microchips, emergency planning manuals, and pet first aid kits all month long in honor of National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day on May 8th.   The goal is to encourage residents to include their pets in their own emergency family planning to help prevent additional tragedy in the wake of an emergency. “California is blessed with amazing weather but living in the Bay Area, we know that an earthquake can happen without warning, “says Margaret Urquhart, Hospital Administrator of Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center. “Helping our clients be prepared to care for their pets is a way we can give back to our patients beyond the exam room. This is also an opportunity for the community to ask questions and become involved in a dialogue regarding their pet’s safety.”

This free and educational seminar will take place outside on the lawn of the hospital. Refreshments will be provided and dogs are invited to attend. A raffle will be held and two fully equipped pet disaster kits will be given away – one for a dog and one for a cat. The kits were assembled by Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center and come in bright orange back packs and are stocked with all the essential items for a pet survival kit – including extra food, first aid items, leashes, water and more!
