Top 5 SRP Stories of the Week

A look at the top stories on San Ramon Patch in the last week.

1.

Shau Tsu Wong, a 64-year-old San Ramon crab fisherman, went out on his boat in Half Moon Bay on Wednesday and has yet to return.

Wong was first reported missing when the Coast Guard received a call at 11:56 p.m. Thursday from Wong's son.

The Coast Gaurd search most of the day Friday, and found his capsized boat, but could not find Wong.

"Conditions on the water have been pretty nice the last couple days," Coast Gaurd offiicer Mark Leahey said. "We're not sure what happened."

The company is seeking construction bids to build a Walmart Neighborhood Market in the Country Club Village Shopping Center off Alcosta in south San Ramon.

There are 167 Walmart Neighborhood Markets in the country. Neighborhood Markets are full-service grocery stores, selling everything one would find in a regular grocery store, according to the Walmart website

"They are looking to end the bidding by the end of the month and open by the end of the year," said Marc Fontes, San Ramon's economic development director.

Around 400 students and teachers went to Dougherty Valley High Tuesday night to hear college recruiters pitch their schools. What made it unique was none of the recruiters were from California.

As tuition at University of California and California State Universities has steadily increased over the last decade, the financial incentive for California students to stay in-state has become less appealing. The college recruiters, which are part of the Regional Admission Counselors of California organization, said the average cost to attend UCs is around $31,200 a year, for CSUs about $22,000 and for out-of-state schools about $27,000.

The was closed for most of the week after a water main broke outside the facility.

With the broken pipe being deeper underground than originally thought, the repairs took longer than first expected.

But, by Friday, the community center was up and running.

A new bar and grill called Firehouse No. 37 is set to move into El Balazo’s old space in San Ramon’s Marketplace shopping center this summer.

Alson, San Ramon’s  closed Jan. 20.
