State Issues Salmonella Warning for Certain Sprouts

he California Department of Public Health has issued a warning for people to avoid eating certain sprouts that may be contaminated by salmonella.

Salmonella was identified in certain sprouts distributed by Louie Foods International during routine testing, health department officials said.

The Fresno company is recalling all Louie's brand sprouts with a use-by date that is on or before April 14, officials said. Products affected by this recall include: Louie's Alfalfa Sprout Mix, distributed in 4-ounce cups and 16-ounce bags; Louie's Clover Sprouts, distributed in 4-ounce cups and 16-ounce bags; Louie's Spicy Sprouts, distributed in 4-ounce cups; and Louie's Broccoli Sprouts, distributed in 4-ounce cups.

The contaminated sprouts were sold to California distributors in the Central Valley and along the Central Coast, officials said. The health department urges consumers to destroy the products or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Those who see the specified sprouts for sale are encouraged to contact the California Department of Public Health's complaint line at 800-495-3232.

No illnesses have been reported, but symptoms of salmonella include fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea that may be bloody, officials said. People who develop symptoms of salmonella after consuming the sprouts should consult their health care provider.

Most infected people recover within a week, but some may develop complications that require hospitalization. Infants, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness, officials said.
