Park of the Week: Walt Disney Elementary Park

With several fun features for kids, this is a park Walt Disney would surely be proud of.

One of San Ramon's biggest prides and joys is the city's amazing park system. Our city has a whopping 53 parks spread throughout our vast community, ranging from small neighborhood playgrounds to multi-acre, multi-feature parks.

Each week we'll be highlighting one of our city parks, showing you photos, listing park features, and telling you what's special about them. We have so many parks that it will take Patch more than a year to profile each of them. So if you have a special park you'd like featured next, let us know!

Park of the Week: Walt Disney Elementary Park

When it came time to name the building that would become Walt Disney Elementary School and it's adjacent park, future students were asked to select a famous American hero. Thus, when the park first opened to the public in 1974 it bore the name of the man who gave us such beloved characters as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.

Given its magical moniker its no surprise that Walt Disney Elementary Park is chock full of fun. One of the park's prime attractions is the number of playgrounds available for children. Aside from the multi-featured play structure and swing set in the park's shady grove, there are also a large jungle gym and a toddler-friendly playground on the school's blacktop.

The blacktop is also home to several full-sized basketball courts, a handball wall, hopscotch and dodgeball court outlines and a painted map of the United States. Hand painted murals including one of the Wizard of Oz add an appropriate touch of creativity.

As a part of Walt Disney Elementary the park also shares the school's great sports facilities. San Ramon's Little League teams make good use of the Walt Disney baseball field while World Cup watchers can take the skills they've seen on TV for a spin on the expansive soccer field.

Athletes and other park-goers can take a break under the trees in the park's picnic area, which is conveniently located near both the playground and the soccer field.
