Marine Remembered, Brewery Looking for Support and Black Friday Quietness

A look back at the most popular stories on San Ramon Patch in the last week.

The week got off on a somber note with near at Danville's Oak Hill Park Tuesday night to pay tribute to 19-year-old Joshua Corral, who died Nov. 18 while serving his country in Afghanistan.

A machine gunner, Corral was fatally injured serving with the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment from the air-ground combat training base at Twentynine Palms.

Corral was on his first Afghanistan deployment, in Helmand province. He began his Marine Corps service in July 2010.

"He was a light in this dark world," said Don Busboom, a history and government teacher at San Ramon Valley High. "He fought a real enemy in a dark place."

Ian Schuster is the president of Schubros Brewery and has started a "Yes In My Back Yard" campaign to help raise money in the lead up to the launch of the local brewery that plans to focus distribution along the I-680 corridor.

Thursday was Thanksgiving and Patch contributor Amy McCurdy looked — the Perry's.

The Plaza has stuggled in general, not just on Black Friday, recently, with a turnover among businesses being the norm. But, there's hope that will change.

"The traffic driven by these more well-known brands, complements our existing mix of local shops and we believe will help them thrive as well," Blackhawk Plaza marketing director Betsy Penson said.
